Flamengo vs Chelsea LIVE: Club World Cup result, latest updates and reaction

Flamengo vs Chelsea LIVE

The Blues are back in Club World Cup action as they take on the Brazilian giants in a tricky-looking group stage clash. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez saw off LAFC on Monday evening in both sides' opening game, in a scoreline which perhaps flattered the Premier League side. Liam Delap made his debut off the bench and laid on the winner for his captain.

Another victory tonight at Lincoln Financial Field could secure the Blues’ spot in the knockout stage, should results go there way. But Flamengo, who are managed by ex-Chelsea left-back Filipe Luis will provide a stern test. A fearsome defensive record boasts seven clean sheets in their last eight games, while former playerJorginho, who made 213 appearances for Chelsea, is expected to start.

Flamengo are in the middle of their domestic campaign, where they currently top the table after 11 games and are currently on a five-game winning streak. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Dom Smith.

Flamengo 2-1 Chelsea

20:34 , Alex Young

20:27 , Alex Young

63min: VAR are checking is Plata was offside in the build-up...

Delap has been replaced by Jackson and James is off for Lavia.

GOAL!

20:26 , Alex Young

62min: There’s the leveller!

Seconds after Plata fluffs a chance, he nods a beauty of a pass towards the back post and substitute Bruno Henrique is on hand to tuck home!

CHANCE!

20:25 , Alex Young

61min: Plata has to be more, my word. Gusto is caught out of possession inside the area, Plata races onto the ball, takes a touch and lashes a shot straight at Sanchez.

Any sort of composure, and that’s 1-1.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:23 , Alex Young

60min: Lucas with another foul, his third of the game and still no card, as Palmer is felled.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:20 , Alex Young

56min: First change for Flamengo as De Arrascaeta is replaced by Bruno Henrique.

CHANCE!

20:18 , Alex Young

55min: Gerson drives into the box, cuts inside and sends Colwill to the shops... but his goal-bound effort is brilliantly blocked by James and Plata cannot tuck home at the back post!

Chelsea survive, but Sanchez looks to have picked up a knock in the process. He should be fine to continue.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:14 , Alex Young

51min: After a bit of a delay, James fizzes it in and Cucurella gets a glancing header on it but it’s not troubling Rossi.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:14 , Alex Young

49min: Gusto fouled by Lucas, so Chelsea have a chance to whip one in.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

20:11 , Alex Young

47min: Chelsea startring the second half better than they did the first, far more on the front foot.

Second half

20:08 , Alex Young

46min: Back underway!

20:05 , Alex Young

Here come the players for the second half.

Dom Smith reports

20:00 , Alex Young

A slender lead for Chelsea at the interval is welcome but also serves as a warning that they have to do more in the second half.

Flamengo have been lively throughout and are absolutely in this game.

(REUTERS)
19:54 , Alex Young

Neto's goal is the difference, but Flamengo can perhaps count themselves a little unlucky not to be level.

Palmer needs to do something, anything.

Half-time!

19:50 , Alex Young

48min: There’s the whistle as Wesley tests Sanchez from 30 yards.

Dom Smith reports

19:48 , Alex Young

Another booking for Chelsea and they've got to be careful, really. Ill discipline could cause them problems in this game given how well Flamengo are playing and that the Blues' lead remains just one goal.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:47 , Alex Young

46min: Frustrations from Delap, perhaps as he flies into a tackle and is way too late. Referee books him.

PENALTY SHOUT!

19:47 , Alex Young

45min: Delap takes a tumble just inside the area, near the touchline, but the contact started outside the area and, even then, wasn’t much to write home about.

Referee isn’t interested, and neither is VAR.

OFF THE LINE!

19:45 , Alex Young

43min: Free kick is wiped in and met by De Arrascaeta at the back post, whose shot-cum-cross back across goal is headed off the line by Colwill!

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:43 , Alex Young

42min: Now Cucurella is penalised after a late barge on Wesley. Gave the referee no choice, there.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:40 , Alex Young

39min: Palmer has just won a foul off Jorginho, which is his first involvement of any note.

Dom Smith reports

19:39 , Alex Young

I'm liking this performance from Delap so far. He uses his body so well to shrug off defenders. Neto the best player on the pitch so far.

(AFP via Getty Images)

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:37 , Alex Young

35min: Flamengo still passing the ball around with relative ease and under little pressure.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:30 , Alex Young

29min: Delap gets shoved over near the corner flag Pereira, who adds some of his own thoughts for good measure. Delap looks up at him, bemused.

It’s a bit feisty out there!

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:28 , Alex Young

28min: Gusto with a sighter from 30 yards, which skips up into Rossi’s grateful arms.

Dom Smith reports

19:27 , Alex Young

That corner was well-claimed by Robert Sanchez. He has been decisive with his handling so far in this match, the Spaniard.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:27 , Alex Young

26min: A couple of corners in quick succession for Flamengo, which neither come to anything. Sanchez with an impressive catch for the second and then almost holds it on for too long.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:24 , Alex Young

23min: Now Neto has been booked after a very late lunge on Wesley.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:22 , Alex Young

20min: The pace of the game has somewhat decreased after a frantic start. Flamengo happy to pass it around their defence and midfield, and so are Chelsea.

Flamengo 0-1 Chelsea

19:19 , Alex Young

17min: Flamengo have reacted well to going behind, and so have their fans. So much noise from the stands.

Dom Smith reports

19:17 , Alex Young

It's fortuitous how the ball bobbles into Neto's path, but we won't care one bit. It's a determined run from the Portuguese, and he slots away coolly. He's in some form, and Chelsea are in business.

(REUTERS)

GOAL!

19:15 , Alex Young

13min: It’s come somewhat against the run of play, but Chelsea lead!

Neto gets fortunate as Flamengo fail to deal with the ball near the halfway, but he’s still got so much to do, running through and then firing past the goalkeeper.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:13 , Alex Young

11min: Early yellow card as Caicedo wipes out Jorginho and then gives him a piece of his mind.

Caicedo seemingly annoyed that Jorginho made a meal of that foul.

Dom Smith reports

19:12 , Alex Young

Nice run down the left from Neto, well watched all the way by the Flamengo defence, but it epitomises the bright start we've seen to this match.

Both sides going for it from the off. Not sure if they'll keep it up in the heat, mind...

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:09 , Alex Young

8min: More slack passing from Chelsea sees Araujo dart into the area, but he takes too long and Caicedo mops up.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:06 , Alex Young

6min: Straight up the other end, Delap is sent scampering after Palmer’s pass, takes a touch into the area, and then forces Rossi into a good save to win a corner.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:06 , Alex Young

5min: Lucas with a pop from left-back which stings Sanchez’s palms.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:05 , Alex Young

4min: Chelsea on the back foot in the opening stages. Sanchez’s poor goal kick doesn’t reach the halfway line, Flamengo pounce and Jorginho fizzes a shot over the bar from 25 yards.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:04 , Alex Young

3min: A great chance for Flamengo as the Chelsea defence parts to leave Plata in acres in the penalty area, but the pass from De Arrascaeta is all wrong.

Flamengo 0-0 Chelsea

19:02 , Alex Young

2min: Colwill with an early foul, which Flamengo players do not take kindly too and quickly surround the referee. Could be a fiesty one, this.

Kick-off!

19:01 , Alex Young

1min: Up and running.

18:59 , Alex Young

The stadium is, perhaps, half-full. Much better than Monday, at least.

18:57 , Alex Young

This takes a while, doesn’t it.

18:54 , Alex Young

Stadium looks great. It’s almost 2pm in Philly as the player walkouts begin.

Not long until kick-off now.

Maresca on the Philly heat

18:44 , Alex Young

“We have the cooling break, which will help us. You need to adapt, you need to be strong. You have to fight with that, but we don’t doubt that. The players are going to deal with it.”

18:35 , Alex Young

It’s fair to say Flamengo fans are bringing the atmosphere in Philly.

(REUTERS)

Lavia looking forward to player walkouts

18:20 , Alex Young

It won’t be too long until we see those ridiculous solo player walkouts, and Romeo Lavia will be gutted he is on the bench tonight.

He said earlier this week: "Why not bring it to the Premier League? It's a bit of a showbiz thing, isn't it? I quite like it.

"The only difference is [if we did it in the Premier League], we might get a bit cold because once you're out there, you have to wait for maybe the other players."

Delap full debut

18:03 , Alex Young

Liam Delap starts for Chelsea for the first time, then, with Jackson dropped to the bench.

It looks like Palmer will be on the right, with Fernandez in the no10 role. James starts again, likely in midfield with Gusto at right-back.

Maresca yet to speak to Mudryk

17:25 , Alex Young

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed he has not yet spoken to winger Mykhailo Mudryk since the Ukrainian was charged with violating anti-doping rules.

The 24-year-old has not played since being suspended last December after testing positive for a prohibited substance, and is facing a lengthy ban after being charged by the Football Association.

Blues boss Maresca fronted questions on Mudryk as he prepared the team for their second Group D match against Flamengo.

"The last time I spoke with Misha, he was quite good. I didn't see him worried, or at least I didn't see him not good. It was OK," Maresca said.

"I don't know how he is now, but for sure in the next days, weeks, we're going to have a talk."

One night in Atlanta

17:12 , Alex Young

Liam Delap made an instant impact for Chelsea as they defeated Los Angeles FC 2-0 in their sparsely-attended Club World Cup opener on Monday evening.

The new £30million signing from Ipswich - who is in the United States with Chelsea this summer instead of at the Under-21 European Championship with England - came off the bench to impress in Monday night’s Group D curtain-raiser played in front of more than 50,000 empty seats in Atlanta, showcasing his quality and providing a debut assist for Enzo Fernandez’s important goal that sealed victory late on.

Chelsea had initially led through Pedro Neto’s stylish first-half effort, deserving their opening three points but riding their luck at times in a competitive and open second half in what was the Blues’ first match since winning the Conference League final last month.

Flamengo vs Chelsea prediction

17:00 , Alex Young

The Brazilian side top their domestic league after 11 games and are in excellent form. Unbeaten in 15 of their last 16 matches across all competitions and are on a five-game winning streak.

Chelsea have won their last four games in all competitions, including the Conference League final 4-1, and have the superior squad.

Chelsea to win, 2-1.

Early Flamengo team news

16:50 , Alex Young

Jorginho, who made 213 appearances for the Blues is set to feature after his recent move to Flamengo from Arsenal. Chief danger Giorgian de Arrascaeta leads the line.

Early Chelsea team news

16:42 , Alex Young

Chelsea are expected to name another strong line-up tonight.

Mamadou Sarr, the 19-year-old centre-back, was on the bench for the opening game and could make his Chelsea debut either from the start or off the bench. He spent last season at sister club Strasbourg but joined the Blues permanently earlier this month.

Noni Madueke prefers playing on the right flank but filled in on the left against LAFC as Chelsea continue to work on signing a right-footed left-winger. The England international could again be deployed on the left.

Maresca is again expected to go strong with his selection. If he picked Liam Delap over Nicolas Jackson, that would represent the new £30million recruit’s first start for the Blues.

There could also be a debut in midfield for Andrey Santos, who was left on the bench against LAFC as Enzo Fernandez and Dario Essugo came on in that position.
