Flamengo fire: 10 dead in blaze at football club youth team dorm

Ten people have died after a fire engulfed a dormitory at the youth team training centre of one of Brazil's biggest football clubs.

The inferno at Ninho do Urubu, the training ground of Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro, has also left three teenage players in a serious condition in hospital.

Firefighter Douglas Henaut told Globo News: "The kids from the Flamengo youth team were sleeping there at the time."

Brazilian news outlet G1 named the first fatalites as Christian Esmerio, a goalkeeper, and 14-year-old Arthur Vinicius.

A post pinned to the top of Christian's Twitter profile shows him posing with a trophy, with a caption reading: "Thank you, my God, for that title, this achievement! Very happy!!!! Glory to God for everything!!! This here is FLAMENGO."

"Flamengo is in mourning," the club posted on its Twitter account.

Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Henaut said athletes between 14 and 17 years were sleeping at the club, but that none of the dead had yet been identified.

The fire broke out at about 5.10am local time (7.10am UK time) and took more than two hours to bring under control.

There has been no word yet on what caused the fire.

Aerial images showed blackened and charred equipment strewn along the ground after crews had extinguished the fire.

A mother of one of the athletes told local media that training on Friday had been cancelled, allowing any youth players whose families live in Rio to return to their homes.

But players whose families lived further afield had remained to sleep in the dorms overnight.

She said: "If there had been training today, the tragedy would have been much greater."

Vinicius Junior, the teenage Real Madrid forward who trained at the facility before joining the Spanish giants last year, tweeted his condolences.

"What sad news! Praying for everyone! Strength, strength, strength," he wrote.

Flamengo idol Zico posted on Instagram: "What a tragedy this with the Flamengo base. What a shock to receive this news here on the other side of the world. That it was a fatality. May God comfort the relatives who lost their children, grandchildren, brothers, nephews, relatives.

"Boys who dreamed of a future in their lives and many, no doubt, in helping their families. Let everything be sorted out, for such tragedy can not be left blank. Lives are gone. May the Black-Red Nation have the strength and faith to overcome this moment."

Flamengo's rivals Sao Paulo were among the Brazilian clubs which shared tributes on Friday. "Our thoughts and prayers," it tweeted, "go out to the families and friends of the victims of the fire at Flamengo Training Center."

The Flamengo professional team and youth teams train at the Ninho do Urubu.

It is one of the most modern training centres in Latin America and one of the largest in the world.

After years of financial difficulties, Flamengo last year spent £4.8million expanding Ninho do Urubu.

In addition to accommodation for young players, the facilities include several pitches, an aquatic park, a gym, a medical centre and a mini stadium.

Flamengo is one of the biggest and most succesful football clubs in Latin America, and also the richest with annual revenue of over £140m.

They play most of their games in Rio's Maracana in front of 80,000 fans.

It is the biggest tragedy to hit Brazilian football since November 2016, when a charter flight carrying the Chapecoense team crashed into the side of a mountain in Colombia. Seventy-one people were killed and six survived.
