Flamengo confirm Pablo Mari exit with tribute ahead of Arsenal transfer

Flamengo have paid tribute to departing defender Pablo Mari ahead of his imminent move to Arsenal.

The Gunners' move for the defender - who spent three years at Manchester City without playing a league game - appeared to have collapsed after discussions between the two clubs broke down at the last minute.

However, it is understood talks progressed in the last 24 hours and Arsenal have now agreed a deal to sign the 26-year-old defender on loan with an option to buy.

And Flamengo have seemingly confirmed the Spaniard's exit with a tribute, hailing the defender for helping them win the Brazilian league title and Copa Libertadores.

In a Twitter post, they said: "The time has come to say goodbye to this defender who arrived at Flamengo to make his mark in our history with the titles of Conmebol Libertadores and the Brazilian Championship.

"Pablo Mari, thanks for everything."

The news will be a huge boost to Arsenal fans, who feared the move had collapsed at the last minute.

The Brazilian club were demanding £13million and, as the Spanish defender arrived in London for a medical over the weekend, the Gunners complained they couldn't afford the fee and said they wanted a loan deal instead.

The two parties, however, have ultimately agreed terms and now it's just a matter of Arsenal concluding personal terms with Mari before they are able to confirm the news.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been desperate to sign a left-footed centre-back and appears to have finally landed one.

Mari came through the academy at Mallorca before moving to Gimnastic and then Manchester City- where he spent three years.

Mari never played for City's first team, but spent time on loan at Girona, NAC and Deportivo La Coruna before moving to Flamengo in July 2019.
