Shia LaBeouf and FKA Twigs, legally known as Tahliah Barnett, have officially found a legal resolution to their long-running lawsuit.
In a 2020 New York Times profile, FKA Twigs leveled very egregious allegations against the Transformers star. The pop star alleged that the American filmmaker was abusive on various levels — physically, emotionally, and even sexually — throughout their one-year relationship. LaBeouf was reportedly throwing her against cars during heated arguments at gas stations and headbutting her when they were in bed together, causing her to bleed.
The “Cellophane” crooner said that during the height of LaBeouf’s abuse, when he would intimidate her into avoiding eye contact with other men, she even learned to look at the floor whenever a male waiter served them at a restaurant. FKA Twigs shared that the reason she filed a $10 million lawsuit against LaBeouf for all the abuse he put her through was to show the tactics abusers use and to demonstrate that no matter your stature, you can still fall victim to them.
LaBeouf, for his part, acknowledged that he had caused a lot of harm to his ex-girlfriend but clarified that most of the accusations leveled against him were false. The Megalopolis star also sought to dismiss the amount FKA Twigs was seeking as excessive. His lawyers argued that her modeling, acting, and music careers are all thriving, and that this served as evidence that she did not need the amount being sought.
Per The Guardian, FKA Twigs’ lawyers argued that any career success she achieved after her relationship with LaBeouf was despite the emotional distress he caused, and that she might have been able to achieve even more if it hadn’t been for her unfortunate run-in with the actor. The two also had a long disagreement about the production of texts by both sides, which even resulted in the trial dates being pushed back several times. The shadow of the case loomed large over LaBeouf’s career, as he has tried to orchestrate multiple failed comebacks.
Well, now, they have agreed to settle the entire matter behind closed doors. FKA Twigs’ lawyers opted to end the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it cannot be resuscitated at a later date. Both parties’ lawyers went ahead and released a statement that read: “Committed to forging a constructive path forward, we have agreed to settle our case out of court. While the details of the settlement will remain private, we wish each other personal happiness, professional success, and peace in the future.”
There will certainly be a reaction to this on social media, with people who had long supported FKA Twigs most likely being the most disappointed, as they might have wanted a harsher sense of retribution for the already embattled LaBeouf. There’s no love lost for the controversial Honey Boy star on social media. These days, as Timothée Chalamet learned very harshly, even being cordial with LaBeouf can bring outrage.
Regardless, FKA Twigs did speak up and also made this decision. She had agency in her reporting of the matter and the filing of the lawsuit, and one can only hope that was the case with this final decision as well. When she’s ready to speak more about this matter, more answers will definitely be revealed.
