Fixed broadband helps AIS revenue gain 2.3% to B186bn

Advanced Info Service (AIS), Thailand’s largest mobile operator by subscriber base, posted total revenue of 186 billion baht in 2022, up 2.3% year-on-year, buoyed by strong growth of fixed broadband income.

Revenue of the fixed broadband business under the AIS Fibre brand surged 19% year-on-year in 2022, outpacing the market growth rate, the firm reported.

With 390,000 customers added to AIS Fibre in 2022, the customer base rose to 2.2 million in total, with its subscriber market share reaching 16%.

According to AIS, the firm was the first in the country to introduce a fixed wireless access service utilising 5G mmWave technology.

The company was also the first player in Thailand to provide an internet speed of 2 gigabits per second (Gbps).

For its mobile business, AIS reported a net increase of more than 1.9 million subscribers last year, bringing the total subscriber base up to 46 million, maintaining its leading position in the industry.

The company’s 5G users surged to 6.8 million in 2022, rising sharply from 2.2 million in 2021.

According to the firm, AIS increased its network coverage to 85% of the

population and 99.9% in Bangkok this year.

The company’s enterprise business reported non-mobile revenue growth of 26% in 2022.

AIS’s enterprise business provides a range of services, including digital infrastructure, cloud platforms and cybersecurity.

The targeted industry solutions include smart manufacturing, smart transport and logistics, smart city and building, as well as smart retail, the firm said.

“We built a digital ecosystem with our strategic partners, who are leading representatives from many different sectors, to serve the needs of the business sector with technological innovation and solutions,” said Somchai Lertsutiwong, chief executive of AIS.

AIS reported net profit of 26 billion baht in 2022, a decline of 3.4% year-on-year, pressured by energy costs and inflation.

The firm’s Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) declined 1.8% year-on-year, while its Ebitda margin was 48%.

In 2023, the firm is committed to a capital expenditure of 27-30 billion baht to achieve its “cognitive telco” aspiration.

“The firm will continue to develop a resilient digital infrastructure and increase network capabilities towards an autonomous network with the use of high-level artificial intelligence and data analytics,” he said.

“We are ready to support mutual growth and level up Thailand’s digital economy at its grass-roots foundations to create seamless connectivity between all sectors including government, private and civil society.”
