Campaigners' message on A-Level results as Government U-turns on decision

'Fix this injustice' was among one of the messages on display at a city centre protest - as pressure mounts on ministers to let teacher-assessed grades be counted following the A-Level results fiasco.

Thousands of students were left disappointed when their teacher-assessed grades were lowered after going through the moderation process.

It led to a downgrading of 40 percent of all A-Level results released on Thursday, August 13 - potentially putting students' university places at risk.

Official figures show students in the poorest areas were marked down by 10.4 percent, while those in the richest were marked down by 8.3 percent, the Mirror reports.

On Monday afternoon (August 17), it was announced A-level and GCSE students in England will now be given grades estimated by their teachers, rather than by an algorithm, after a government U-turn.

A-level students, opposition MPs, senior Conservatives and Ofqual's own advisors staged a revolt over the A-level results "shambles" and ordered Boris Johnson to U-turn.

Labour MP for Nottingham East, Nadia Whittome, said: "I stand in full solidarity with students protesting in Nottingham this week. This algorithm has marked down almost 40% of predicted grades and has served to further entrench inequality.

"Young people from poorer backgrounds have been hit hardest while those receiving private education are twice as likely to have been awarded top grades. Students who have worked so hard are being robbed of their futures and Ofqual has now suspended its appeals criteria, with no time scale for when this will be resolved.

"No student should have their life chances jeopardised as a result of government failings. I call on the government to act urgently to address this scandal to bring an end to the unacceptable chaos and distress faced by students and their families, or the country faces a lost Covid-19 generation.”
