Five-year-old child with underlying health condition is youngest victim of coronavirus

A five-year-old child has died after testing positive for coronavirus, NHS England has said.

The child is believed to be the youngest person to die from the virus in the UK.

The child is among 637 people who tested positive for Covid-19 in England and have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 3,939, NHS England said.

The oldest patient was 104, and 40 had no known underlying conditions, aged between 48 and 93. Their families have been informed.

The latest figures show 4,313 people with the virus have now died across the UK - up by 708 on Friday's figure. This is the highest number of people to die from the virus in one day in the UK.

A total of 41,903 people have now tested positive for the virus in the UK, and 4,313 of those hospitalised have died.

The true figure is likely to be higher as the government's figures only include those who have died in hospital from the virus.

In Wales the number of those confirmed to have Covid-19 rose to 2853 with 154 having died.

In the daily Downing Street press conference, Cabinet Secretary Michael Gove paid tribute to the youngster and urged to public to stay home.

Michael Gove said his thoughts are with the child's family (PA)

Mr Gove said: “Our thoughts today are also with the family of the five-year-old child with underlying health conditions who’s tragically died.”

He reiterated the instruction for people to stay at home, and added: “Whatever the temptations this weekend, please don’t go outside to visit the lakes, the beaches, the countryside.

“Take pride instead in keeping your own families and communities safe.

“The more we restrict contact, the more we slow the spread of the infection, the more time we have to build capacity in the NHS.”
