Five-year-old boy allegedly hit by car in Malak, Darwin's north, while riding bike

A five-year-old boy riding his bike has been briefly knocked unconscious after being allegedly hit by a car in the Darwin suburb of Malak.

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the incident happened about midday on Tuesday.

"We had reports of a young five-year-old boy hit by a car in the rain there, riding his pushbike," he said.

"The reports we had at the time was that he was hit by a car and unconscious.

"Thankfully when we got there he was out from under the car and conscious and had a number of back injuries and head injuries."

Mr Garraway described the incident as "every parent's worst nightmare" but said the outcome could have been worse.

Paramedics transported the boy from Malak, about 15 kilometres north of Darwin, to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

"Thankfully he is now recovering in hospital with non-life threatening injuries so that was a good result in the end, it could have been a lot worse," Mr Garraway said.

Northern Territory police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
