Five-year compost supply deal for leading organic waste business as Yorkshire duo bloom

A 200,000 tonne compost supply contract has been signed by Hull-based Wastewise.

The five year deal with distributor Vital Earth Sales, will see 80 per cent of the current production sold under the Doncaster company’s SupaGrow brand.

Wastewise, a management and treatment company, has won local authority work worth £7 million this summer, adding a third processing site to handle the municipal collections it undertakes across the north of England.

Now after more than a year of market testing involving extensive mix trials, the agreement has been reached.

Bob Wilkes, operations director, said: “At Wastewise we promote the use of sustainable waste treatment methods to help achieve zero waste to landfill. Composting is nature’s way of recycling organic waste, being an environmentally responsible and cost-effective method. We are delighted that this new contract with Vital Earth Sales Ltd represents a further step in ensuring that nothing we recycle goes to waste.”

Vital Earth Sales is a producer of peat-free composts and growing media, including soil improvers and topsoil, in its own right.

It will take 40,000 tonnes a year from the processing sites in East Yorkshire, Bradford and Crewe, selling in bulk and 20 litre sealed bags nationwide in builders’ merchants, garden centres and retail outlets.

Sam Robinson, managing director Vital Earth Sales Ltd, said: “Although we are experts in producing topsoils and soil improvers, this agreement allows us to manufacture the best peat-free topsoil in the market.

“Working with Wastewise provides the assurance that our compost supply chain will remain not only constant but of a consistently high standard for a number of years to come ensuring certainty of supply for our customers.”

At processing stage, the finished compost is screened into different product grades depending on the end market. All are certified to BSI PAS 100 and Compost Quality Protocol standards for use in horticulture, agriculture, landscaping and land restoration.
