Five wounded after shooting at California state park

LOS ANGELES _ Five people were wounded when someone opened fire on a "large gathering" at Oceano Dunes State Park near San Luis Obispo early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Park officials received a 911 call about a shooting shortly after midnight, according to a statement released by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department. It remains unclear what led to the shooting and investigators could not provide a suspect description as of Sunday morning, said Grace Norris, a public information officer for the sheriff's department.

Norris said six people were hospitalized, five of whom suffered gunshot wounds. She could not immediately comment on the severity of the injuries.

The sheriff's department said in its statement that detectives consider the shooting an "isolated incident."

The victims were part of a "large gathering" on the south end of the Oceano Dunes, a Central California state recreation area with more than five miles of beach and dunes that is also open for off-roading. The area sits 15 miles south of San Luis Obispo.

The location where the shooting took place is a popular campsite, but Norris could not say exactly what the crowd was doing at the time of the attack. It also remains unclear what type of gun was used or how the victims knew one another.
