Five ways to make your skin healthy, clear and glowing without spending a penny

A skin expert has revealed his top hacks for achieving a clearer complexion without spending a single penny. The cost of living crisis is forcing many people to cut back on luxuries such as expensive lotions and grooming products.

But glowing skin does not have to cost a fortune, according to Sam Cinkir, CEO of skin and hair clinic Este Medical Group. He said: “Many households are facing tough choices on how and where to spend their money at the moment, and essentials are taking priorities over luxuries.

“Trips to a spa or expensive face creams might be out of reach for some people for the time being, but there are easy ways to improve your skin for free. It’s especially important to take care of your skin in the winter as colder weather can have a really negative effect and leave it dry and flaky.

“It then becomes irritated and itchy and without adequate moisture, it cracks and sheds. Simple hacks such as changing your pillowcase or giving your face a gentle massage can go a long way to keeping dull and dry skin at bay.

“Even something as simple as switching hot water for cold water when you wash your face in the morning can make a big difference.”

Sam Cinkir’s top skincare hacks that don’t cost a penny

Swap hot water for cold water

Mr Cinkir said: “We all wash our faces in our morning grooming routine, but doing it wrong can have a negative impact on your skin.

“Cold water is much better than hot water as it wakes up and refreshes the skin, as well as reducing puffiness and inflammation.

“On the other hand, hot water strips your skin of its natural oils and causes it to dry out.”

Change your pillowcase

“It’s no secret our beds are home to lots of our dead skin, bacteria and even tiny little mites that can flare up our skin as we sleep.

“Changing your pillowcase at least once a week and washing them in a hot setting to kill microbes will help keep your complexion fresh.”

Give your face a massage

“You don’t have to spend a lot of money in a spa to have a relaxing massage to benefit your skin - you can easily do it yourself.

“Instead, use your fingers to give yourself a gentle massage under the eye area in a clockwise direction a few times.

“This will help boost circulation and reduce inflammation.”

Sleep on your back

“We spend an average of a third of our life asleep, so it makes sense that how we drift off has an impact on various aspects of our bodies and our health.

“Sleeping with your face in the pillow squashes the skin and can lead to wrinkles so it’s best to nod off on your back and keep the back of your head on the pillow rather than your face.”

Tone down the makeup

“Too much makeup can be bad news for your skin, clogging pores and leaving it unable to breathe.

“Also, many products contain chemicals that can contribute to problems such as acne, dryness and dehydration.

“Perhaps try to tone down your makeup routine, switch to more natural products or even go bare-faced a few days a week.”
