Five ways to increase your chances of winning £169m EuroMillions jackpot tonight

Tonight's EuroMillions jackpot is the largest in history after no one claimed the prize on Friday night.

The jackpot has now rolled over to a whopping £169m , and if a UK resident were to win the jackpot they would be the richest British winner in the lottery's history.

The current record for the biggest lottery win in the UK currently stands at £161 million, which was won by from North Ayrshire in 2011.

Speaking about Tuesday's draw, the senior winners' advisor at The National Lottery, Andy Carter, said: "If the jackpot isn't won on Tuesday, it will roll down into the next prize tier where there is at least one winner.

"If the jackpot is won, it could make the UK's biggest ever winner.

"As the jackpot is now capped, tonight's draw has seen eight players bank bigger prizes for matching five numbers and just one Lucky Star. Three lucky UK players each won £1.8m."

While winning the lottery comes mainly down to luck, there are things you can do to boost your chances of bagging the jackpot.

Here's how to give yourself the best chance of winning Tuesday's EuroMillions jackpot.

1.  Stop being tempted to spread out numbers evenly

It can be tempting to fill out your lottery ticket to make things look nice and evenly spread out, but this won't help you win. Don't be scared to bunch numbers together.

2.  Extend your numbers up to 50

The majority of numbers picked are below 30, as people tend to opt for birthdays, anniversaries and memorable dates. If you want to increase your chances of not having to share the jackpot with anybody else make sure you include numbers up to the limit of 50.

3. Don't pick last week's numbers

You might think you're being clever by picking last week's numbers, but you're not. The likelihood of the same numbers coming up again is low, and it'll probably do you more harm than good.

4. Don't be tempted by the number 13 - more people pick it than you think

13 is historically an unlucky number, but a lot of people pick it thinking nobody else will. It's actually the seventh most popular lottery number when it comes to being picked, so you're better off picking a different digit if you don't want to share your winnings.

5. Play online if you can

Playing online means you never risk losing a winning ticket. Last year a staggering £122.5million was left unclaimed, with some of the reason lying with lost tickets.

Playing online also means you can pay via direct debit, so you don't need to worry about getting yourself down to the shop in time or missing a week.

The biggest benefit, though, is that you'll be notified if you win, and can use the handy ticket checker to make sure where you stand.
