Five ways employers can help male staff to balance work and family life

Family Friendly Working Scotland will mark International Men's Day today with an event to explore how men and their families can benefit from flexible working.

The supper club titled: The Working Man in 2019 will involve a discussion panel of three men and one woman from varying professional backgrounds and with different family arrangements. It will be hosted by law firm DWF at its Glasgow offices.

But how can employers do more to help men work fleixibly? FFWS recently commissioned a YouGov of Scottish Business Leaders to find out what they are doing - and here are their five starting points.

Working from home

53% of employers questioned said they already facilitate this. It means dads get more time with their children and other loved ones, especially those hours and minutes taken up by commuting.

Time away for personal appointments

48% of bosses make allowances for meetings that can include not just doctor's appointments but parents' evenings, school concerts and that unforgettably nursery nativity.

Informal or ad-hoc adjustments to working hours

41% trust their employees enough to allow a bit of give and take when it comes to those little emergencies that crop up in family life.

Part time hours

39% will consider allowing a reduction in hours to allow more time to share childcare and other family duties… not to mention the chores.

Flexitime

38% allow employees to work a set number of hours but with a choice over the start and finish times.
