Five-vehicle crash on M5 leaves van driver injured

A van driver has been injured in a five-vehicle accident on the M5.

The collision happened between junctions 20 (Clevedon) and 19 (Portishead) of the northbound carriageway shortly after 8am today (June 27).

Police have confirmed the driver of a van was treated by paramedics at the scene, Somerset Live reports.

One lane of the motorway was closed while emergency services dealt with the collision, but it has reopened and traffic has returned to normal.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a five-vehicle crash shortly after 8am in lane three of the M5 northbound between junctions 20 and 19.

“Three vehicles had been moved to the hard shoulder but two remain in the third lane.

“The driver of van in lane three is receiving was receiving attention from ambulance - his injuries are not believed to be serious.”

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We attended with an ambulance, an operations officer and hazardous area response team."

"One patient was taken to hospital for further treatment."
