Five upcoming Champions Leagues games set to go behind closed doors over coronavirus fears

Five of the Champions League matches scheduled for the next fortnight look set to be played behind closed doors amid coronavirus concerns.

Liverpool take on Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday evening, with everything due to go ahead as normal.

But it has now been confirmed that Bayern Munich vs Chelsea, Valencia vs Atalanta, PSG vs Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona vs Napoli will take place in empty stadiums.

Juventus vs Lyon next week is expected to be contested without fans present after sporting activity in Italy was suspended until April 3rd at the earliest.

PA Sport reported yesterday that the decision did not cover Italian clubs or their national teams competing in international competitions such as the Champions League.

But with the entire country now placed in lockdown , it remains to be seen what will happen with that tie.

Aside from Liverpool's match, that could leave only RB Leipzig vs Spurs tonight and and Manchester City vs Real Madrid on the 17th being held with supporters.

In the UK, more than 300 cases of coronavirus have now been identified according to figures released yesterday - and five people who tested positive for the disease have died.

An update on the UK picture is set to be released later this afternoon.

The Government said on Monday that there was currently "no rationale" for cancelling sports events in the UK because of coronavirus spread.

meeting was held in London between sporting authorities, broadcasters and government representatives to discuss the situation.

And a spokesperson for the department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which hosted the meeting yesterday, said: "Senior government officials chaired a constructive meeting of sports and broadcast partners, as part of sensible contingency planning in relation to Covid-19.

"This included a discussion of how staging sporting events behind closed doors could work in practice, should the situation change and become necessary.

"However based upon the current scientific advice from the Government's medical experts there is no rationale to close or cancel sporting events as things stand.

"We will remain in regular dialogue with sports governing bodies and broadcasters, ensuring they are in receipt of the most up to date guidance from the health authorities."
