Five towns vanish from England's 'worst places to live' list as new places rise to top

The polling has closed for the 2022 list of England's "worst places to live" - and five of last year's least popular places have managed to make their way out of the top ten.

The tongue-in-cheek list, which is compiled after residents have the chance to vote for their own hometowns, broke records for 2022, with 110,172 locals voting for their own communities.

The submissions also see locals offer an insight on what it's really like to live there, citing factors like “endless rain” and shocking hygiene as reasons that should deter people from moving there.

This year’s poll saw a substantial shift in the places that received the most votes for the “worst place”, with Hull, Wakefield, Torquay and Halifax all rising in popularity to make their way out of the "top ten".

They were replaced by Bolton, Corby, Slough and Aylesbury, which shot up from its 2021 ranking of 18th worst town, to receive the most votes for the least popular place to live.

Hull, which last year was ranked 5th worst in the charts, made a jump to 24th place. While the move suggested a rise in popularity, one voter still went as far as to describe the town as a "living hell for decent folk".

Last year's 6th place ranking, Wakefield, didn't appear in this year's list of England's top 50 "worst towns" at all. It was unclear whether this was due to improved living conditions, or whether the residents were simply too down in the dumps to vote at all.

Torquay, which last year was crowned England's 9th "worst place to live" had this year received relatively less votes for the "worst place", moving to 33rd place. It had earned a rather ineloquent review from one local as "The English Sh*tty Area".

And Halifax had also happily vanished from the 2022 list of England's top 50 "worst towns", despite being ranked the 10th least desirable place to live in 2021.

This year the poll, compiled by iLivehere, found a new winner as Peterborough managed to drop to number five after "three glorious years of taking the crown".

Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire instead took the top spot, after scoring 25 per cent more votes than runner-up Huddersfield.

Despite Peterborough's reign being over, residents are still offered up some travel advice for anyone considering a visit.

They claimed: "It is customary if a stranger holds eye contact with you for more than three seconds, to shout “WHAT”??? and become extremely aggressive."

Discussing Aylesbury, locals said the traffic jams in the town are part of the "magnificent beauty" of the area and "all part of the tour".

They said: "As you enter into Aylesbury, you find yourself in a traffic jam.

"Don’t worry, it’s all part of the tour. Being stuck in the traffic allows you to observe the magnificent beauty of all the ‘trashy citizens’ that live there."

Huddersfield came in second place after scoring more votes than half the towns on the list.

One resident claimed: "Not all of Huddersfield is bad… just 70% of it."

Another resident last year made equally cutting comments about the town, saying: "Huddersfield should be avoided by all those who desire to keep their wallets, mobile phones and most of all their sense of smell."

Climbing a massive 22 notches on the list and sliding into the top 10 at number six is Bolton - which pollsters called the "Mancunian dingleberry".

One contributor admitted "there are much worse places in Britain", but claimed the "seemingly endless rain" only strengthens "feeling of sadness [...] and pointlessness of this place".

Another made a quip about the town's takeaway industry, claiming restaurants there have "reached the lofty heights of ONE star for hygiene".

The two non-movers in this year's list were Huddersfield, Jaywick in Essex, an area described as making "even the worst parts of Blackpool seem like paradise", according to voters.

One said: "There’s a reason why Ross Kemp visited what he dubbed as ‘Britain’s toughest seaside resort'."

Satellite town Slough made its top 10 debut this year, coming in at number nine.

A poetry fan recalled the words of poet John Betjeman, who famously urged bombs to rain down on the town.

They wrote: "John Betjeman had the right idea. But not even in his wildest nightmares could he envisage the gold-plated, Currys Superstore-plagued, professional Ali G-bedevilled monster that Slough would become."
