Five things that 'ruined' Kate and Meghan's relationship as 'both cried' after dress fitting

A tearful bust-up between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle in the run-up to the Sussex's wedding has been described as mutual as insiders share the series of incidents that put the sisters-in-law under strain.

Reports of the infamous row over bridesmaids dresses first surfaced when the Daily Telegraph reported Meghan had made Kate cry at a fitting for the royal wedding in May 2018.

But in Meghan and Harry's Oprah interview last week, the Duchess of Sussex said it was the other way round and sources now claim both Duchesses were left in tears by the incident.

Tensions between Harry and William are also said to have pushed the sisters-in-law apart, with the Duchess of Sussex reportedly snubbed when Kate went shopping without her.

Days after Harry and Meghan's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince William said he was yet to speak directly to his brother while Kate has remained silent.

It remains to be seen whether the group, once dubbed the Fab Four, can reconcile, but what exactly led Meghan and Kate to this moment?

The bridesmaid fitting row

The row has become the focus of much debate, with Meghan insisting she was the one left in tears by the incident when she spoke to Oprah Winfrey.

"A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining - yes, the issue was correct - about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings," said Meghan.

Meghan, Kate, designer Clare Waight Keller, two assistants from the Givenchy fashion house and Melissa Toubati, Meghan's aide were at the fitting for Princess Charlotte.

But it's believed the dress didn't fit, and with little time left for changes to be made, stress began to mount and tears were shed, just weeks after Kate gave birth to Prince Louis.

But in contrast to previous claims, sources have now said it was both Meghan and Kate who were left in tears after the ordeal, reports the Sun on Sunday.

A source said: "Both women were clearly shaken by the bridesmaid’s fitting incident.

"There are two sides to this story. We have now heard them both."

Meghan 'threw Kate's apology flowers in the bin'

Insiders have said the second flashpoint allegedly came when Kate offered Meghan flowers as an apology for her part to play in the row.

Sources claim the bouquet thrown in the bin and a door was slammed in Kate's face, reports the Mail on Sunday, although Meghan Markle has said there is evidence to support her version of events.

Meghan told Oprah that she has forgiven the Duchess of Cambridge, but said the tearful row was a "turning point" that marked the beginning of a "character assassination".

Tensions between William and Harry

Other insiders have claimed that the relationship was doomed to failure because of a deeper rift between William and Harry, which started "long before" the younger brother met Meghan Markle.

Years of simmering tensions between the brothers reportedly came to a head when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's interview with Oprah Winfrey was aired.

Harry explained how he had drifted from members of the Royal Family and was at one point shut off from his dad Prince Charles who stopped taking his calls.

The first question in the Oprah interview alluded to the alleged fall-out between the two brothers, with Harry saying their relationship is "space" at the moment but that "time heals all things hopefully".

One sore point was the running of Harry and William's joint charity, The Royal Foundation, with the brothers clashing on how to manage wildlife conservation, reports the Mail on Sunday.

Harry allegedly preferred a "hands-on" approach, whereas William was more interested in empowering local communities to carry out the work themselves, sources say.

Then, with William increasingly involved in meetings about matters of state in preparation for being King, Harry realised, as he later said, that they were "on different paths".

The shopping incident

The Cambridges moved into the vast Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace while Harry and Meghan were given the smaller Nottingham Cottage.

It was here that the fourth setback came, when Kate allegedly snubbed Meghan to go shopping in nearby Kensington High Street without alone.

Although both duchesses had expressed a desire to go on the trip, Kate went ahead in her Range Rover alone without inviting Harry's then-girlfriend.

The alleged divide between the brothers is said to have been a key driving force behind Harry and Meghan's decision to leave Britain for an £11million Californian mansion.

Commonwealth Day Service

The US move meant that the couple were distanced from The Firm, which became clear at the Commonwealth Day service last year.

At the event the Sussexes, who by that point had stepped down from Royal duties, were told they must take their seats at Westminster Abbey.

In a last minute change, Prince William and Kate Middleton missed out on the formal entrance and took their seats in the High Alter in the row in front of the Sussexes in what appeared to be a bid to build bridges.

Meghan was seen to mouth “hi” and give a small wave to William and Kate, followed by a “hello”, in what appeared to be a tense meeting of the former 'Fab Four'.

After the service, Meghan and Harry appeared to keep their distance from Kate and William, as they met with guests including Anthony Joshua and Craig David.

Commenting on the Sussex and Cambridge reunion, body language expert Judi James told Mirror Online described it was a "rather odd greeting ritual".

She said: "Harry and Meghan looked a lot more genuinely cheerful, and Harry especially, through a really affectionate smile at Kate.

"But when it was William, you could see Harry was slightly more rigid and his lips were closed."
