Five things that could change in Phase Two of easing lockdown restrictions in Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon  is optimistic Scotland could be in a position to move to the next phase of easing  lockdown restrictions by the end of next week.

The SNP leader was speaking after it was revealed on Monday that no new deaths from  Covid-19  had been recorded north of the Border for the second day in a row.

But what would phase two of easing lockdown look like?

Restaurants and pubs with outdoor seating opening

It's been an unusually mild spring and early summer in Scotland. Which has made it a doubly frustrating time for owners of pubs and restaurants that would usually be heaving with customers.

They'll be hoping the good weather sticks around when phase two begins - as hospitality businesses with outdoor seating areas will be allowed to open with social distancing measures in place.

In Glasgow, a task-force has already been set up to help pub and bars start trading again - with owners encouraged to submit their ideas on how outdoor seating could work.

Meeting people indoors

While most people have enjoyed meeting others outdoors during phase one, we all know the good weather can't last forever.

Thankfully, phase two allows for people from one household to meet another indoors - if social distancing and hygiene rules are followed. While the Scottish Government has yet to reveal further details on what this means, it is likely indoor meetings will be restricted to small groups - so no house parties, for now.

Getting back to work

Holyrood ministers are keen to avoid the prospect of packed trains and buses like those seen in London during lockdown.

But they also realise the importance of getting the economy moving again before the furlough scheme comes to an end.

So under phase two, staff who can't work from home will be encouraged back out - with bosses urged to stagger shift times so not everyone is rushing out the door for a 9am start.

This means many non-essential, non-office workplaces will begin to reopen - such as factories, workshops, and research centres.

Public transport will offer increased services, but strict social distancing will be required.

Public gatherings

Strict rules on the number of people you can meet up with will remain in place - but there will be some changes.

Churches will reopen for private prayer, but not services at this time.

Marriages and other civil ceremonies will be allowed to resume, but with a "minimal" number of attendees. More details on these changes are still to be announced.

Sport and leisure

Among the many sad sights of lockdown life has been playparks with their gates closed and swings chained-up. But parks should reopen under phase two - which is great news for the many parents looking to keep their kids occupied.

Professional sport will also be allowed to resume - but the guidelines on this are still being worked out.

Football is likely to be played behind closed doors - while broadcast live online for fans to enjoy - for weeks after the season formally resumes.
