Five things spotted in Everton training as David Unsworth oversees injury return

The work hasn't stopped for Everton's squad during the international break.

A number of Blues stars have been called up to represent their respective countries over the coming week, but many have stayed at Finch Farm.

With the focus of Rafa Benitez remaining firmly on the visit of West Ham United to Goodison Park later this month, he's keen to put those who are still on Merseyside through their paces.

Everton have released their latest round of images from the training complex to keep supporters updated with what is going on behind-closed-doors during this time.

And the pictures have thrown up some interesting points that should be pointed out.

Unsworth attends

There was perhaps a surprise face pictured among the first team training session in the latest images released.

Under-23 manager David Unsworth was in attendance and could be seen having a talk with Benitez, seemingly ahead of training getting underway at Finch Farm.

The youth boss has seen a number of his own squad called up for international duty at various levels over the course of the current break.

And, of course, a couple have also been called up to represent the Everton senior side in some capacity in recent matches - with Lewis Dobbin and Charlie Whitaker both on the bench against Manchester United last Saturday.

It is unclear what Unsworth and Benitez would have been discussing before training on this occasion, but it's certainly interesting to see the former around the senior session.

With his role as Director of Academy alongside his under-23 duties, you can see why the coach would be interested.

Injury absences

Going by the latest images at the very least, there seems to still be some important injury absences for Everton.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Seamus Coleman were both pictured in individual training before the current international break as they work their way back from respective injuries.

Meanwhile, Richarlison posted a number of updates from himself in the gym as he continues to recover from a knee injury sustained against Burnley last month.

Fans were hoping that some, if not all, of the trio could be fit by the time the West Ham match came around - but there didn't seem to be much in the way of immediate encouragement on that front in these pictures.

None of the three featured in any of the images from Finch Farm, which could just be a coincidence of course.

But it seems that none of them have quite re-joined the rest of their teammates in full sessions as of yet.

Iwobi returns

There was one injury return that must be made a note of, however.

Alex Iwobi missed Everton's clash with Manchester United just before the international break with a slight issue, with Benitez confirming before the match that he would be a doubt.

And it seems that the midfielder's issue was not a serious one at all, as he was back among the group and seemingly taking part in full training throughout the latest pictures.

Given Anthony Gordon' performance at Old Trafford and with potentially other returns from injury to come in the future, it will be interesting to see how Iwobi might force his way back into the line-up from now on.

Townsend close

Andros Townsend has undoubtedly been one of the highlights of Everton's season.

The summer signing has certainly hit the ground running in his new surroundings, not least by scoring an important equaliser against Manchester United just before the international break got underway.

It's clear that the 30-year-old has a strong connection with Benitez, dating back to their time together at Newcastle, and the latest images from Everton training perfectly summarise that point.

The pair can be seen on numerous pictures having a close conversation with each other away from the rest of the squad, with the manager perhaps getting some individual ideas over to Townsend.

The duo have often spoken about their close working relationship in the past and they have a lot of praise for each other, and images such as these show exactly why they understand each other so well.

No youth involvement

As a little side-note, there didn't seem to be any of Everton's youth contingent involved in the latest set of training images released by the club.

Over the course of the last few weeks and months, it has been quite common to see members of the under-23 squad stepping up and getting involved in individual sessions.

In some cases on this occasion, it's worth noting that the Blues do have a number of their youngsters out on international duty at various levels over the course of the current break.

Lewis Dobbin and Elijah Campbell, for example, have both been selected to represent England at their respective youth levels.

But while U23s manager Unsworth was in attendance in the pictures, taken on Wednesday, it doesn't seem like any of his squad had joined him.
