Five things spotted in Everton behind-the-scenes footage as Calvert-Lewin reaction speaks volumes

Everton pulled off an impressive comeback victory against Southampton on Saturday to mark the return of a sold out Goodison Park.

Having played in empty stadiums for an entire season, the Toffees scored three goals at the Gwladys Street end to put massive smiles on faces following Rafa Benitez's first Premier League game in charge.

Everton caught it all on camera and the club have released a 'behind-the-scenes' video on their YouTube channel showing the entire opening day, from the moment the turnstiles opened right up to the full-time celebrations.

Here are five things we spotted...

Pickford turns the sprinkler

There was a brilliant ovation for Everton's goalkeepers as they came out to warm up at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

That was despite there not being too many fans in their seats at that particular time, with many soaking up the atmosphere outside the ground before heading in for the match.

And all three goalkeepers - Jordan Pickord, Asmir Begovic and Harry Tyrer - were quick to show their appreciation to those watching on and gave them a round of applause back before beginning their pre-match work.

Those drills involved some general fitness warm-ups, making sure that Pickford in particular was well stretched and ready to go.

While this was taking place, however, the sprinklers were still watering the ground on the Gwladys Street side of the pitch - which eventually proved unnecessary as the rain was persistent.

But the England international had to bend down to turn one of the sprinklers out of his way so he could continue with his warm-up.

He avoided a soaking until the heavens opened, at least.

Summer heroics marked

Richarlison headed straight into Saturday’s game against Southampton fresh from winning Olympic gold with Brazil just last week. Pickford, meanwhile, returned to Goodison Park after helping England reach a first tournament final in 55 years after five clean sheets at Euro 2020 and the duo’s achievements were acknowledged by all at Everton.

Richarlison was gifted a brilliant commemorative print which featured an image of the forward and his medal along with the tag ‘He’s Brazilian…’ by Director of Football Marcel Brands after the warm-up.

Later, as the players walked out to Z Cars and stood ready for the pre-match handshakes ahead of kick-off, a banner was unfurled from the Upper Gwladys Street, showing Pickford wearing the number one shirt alongside the Everton crest and the Three Lions badge.

Class from the club and the fanbase to pay tribute to two stars who shined on the international stage and what a feeling it must have been for Richarlison and Pickford heading into the Premier League opener.

Football with fans is everything

As Abdoulaye Doucoure whipped his shirt off and headed to the corner flag after firing Everton into the lead, some fans in the Lower Bullens couldn’t help themselves and spilled over onto the touchline to join in with the celebrations.

After 18 long months away from the Grand Old Lady, a handful of Blues somehow found their way over the advertising hoardings and onto the side of the pitch to embrace their heroes.

Goalscorer Doucoure, who was playing at a packed Goodison Park for the first time since signing for the Toffees last summer, was given a proper welcome as he was hugged and lifted into the air by one buoyant supporter.

It was a football scene reminiscent of a bygone era, all good-natured as ecstatic - albeit mischievous - fans punched the air and celebrated with the team.

Calvert-Lewin final whistle celebration

Dominic Calvert-Lewin didn't take long to get himself back on an Everton scoresheet.

The striker got off the mark in the opening match of 2020/21 against Spurs last year to set up his best ever goalscoring campaign at a senior level.

And, in the dying minutes of his side's 3-1 win this weekend, he got his opportunity to do the same this time around - stooping low to produce a diving header beyond Alex McCarthy from Richarlison's excellent cross.

When the final whistle came about, the striker couldn't contain his joy.

The behind-the-scenes footage released by Everton shows the England international in the moment the referee brought an end to Saturday's clash, and he instantly turned to the crowd to double fist-pump and celebrate with them all.

It was an emotional day for many and the striker couldn't help but let his own show on full display after the whistle!

Gray gives shirt away

The appreciation for the squad didn't stop straight after the game was over, either.

Seamus Coleman later led his teammates around the pitch on a lap which saw them applaud those who had finally been able to return to their seats.

Everyone had huge smiles on their faces as they were showing their appreciation for the supporters, and one young fan even got himself a gift from one new signing.

Demarai Gray had a fantastic debut on Saturday, constantly proving himself a threat against Southampton right up until he received a standing ovation when he was substituted.

And the former Bayer Leverkusen man made sure one young fan would never forget the occasion as he went right over to him and handed him his match-worn shirt - before staying to pose for a picture.

A great gesture from the winger.
