Five things people in England can do this week that Scottish people can't

These are five things people in England can do this week that Scottish people can't due to current restrictions.

With the continued rise of Omicron cases across the UK many countries have introduced a number of temporary measures to curb the spread of the virus. The new rules vary across Scotland, Ireland and Wales with England yet to have any new restrictions introduced.

These are the five things you can do in England but you can’t do in Scotland at the moment.

Go to the gym without social distancing

Currently in Scotland gyms, cinemas and other leisure facilities have reinforced social distancing measures while in England you are able to go to the gym or cinema with no restrictions in place.

Attend a football match

It will be a while until sports fans can attend matches again with up to 100 people allowed at indoor standing events and Up to 200 people at indoor seated events.

Go to the theatre

The same goes for indoor and outdoor gigs and concerts with many theatres like the Edinburgh Playhouse and King's Theatre cancelling productions from boxing day onwards due to crowd restrictions.

Meanwhile in England you can still attend football matches, theatre performances and concerts as there are no restrictions on crowds.

Ordering a drink at the bar

In Scotland pubs and bars are only allowed to serve alcohol if they provide table service. Many nightclubs have reverted to table service style establishments to remain open over the next couple of weeks.

Meanwhile in England you can still stroll up to the bar to order a pint.

Going for a boogie

In England you can still visit night clubs which are now closed across Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

In Scotland nightclubs are closed for a period of at least three weeks, although can stay open if they operate as a pub with table service and distancing.

England remains under the government’s less stringent plan B curbs, after Boris Johnson put off any decision on tighter controls until after Christmas but the prime minister has said he will not hesitate to impose new rules if necessary.

On the economical impact of pubs, restaurants and other industries affected Finance Secretary Kate Forbes said: "These temporary restrictions are targeted at reducing the spread of Omicron while the accelerated vaccination programme takes effect.

"I understand how difficult this has been for businesses in recent weeks but we must reduce our contacts and limit the spread of the virus.

"We're providing £375 million in business support, which is a significant investment, to support those who have experienced cancellations and help them get back on their feet in the new year.

"The best way to support business sustainably is to get the virus back under control. Please get your boosters and stay at home as much as possible just now."
