Five theories around the 'mystery' death of West Lothian woman Kirsty Maxwell in new MTV show

A documentary on the tragic death of West Lothian woman Kirsty Maxwell who fell from the 10th floor of an apartment block in Benidorm, aired on MTV last night.

Presented by journalists Linda Adey and Kirsty McKenzie, the True Life Crime documentary entitled 'Hen Night Horror' explored a number of theories surrounding the 'mysterious death' of the 27-year-old.

In 2017 Kirsty travelled to Benidorm with a group of friends for a hen party, but her body was tragically found one morning by the pool of the hotel.

It is still not clear what happened to Kirsty Maxwell, who was found dead after falling from an apartment on the floor above that was occupied by five British men at the time.

In the documentary, her parents Brian and Denise maintain that they feel that her death was never investigated properly and that they are still waiting on answers about what went on in the room before her death.

According to Spanish police, the five men were investigated and it was ruled that her death was accidental. Here are all of the theories the show investigated.

Suicide

The first theory explores that Kirsty had tried to take her own life, but her parents said that they believe that this is 'rubbish' and that she was a very happy person.

Her friends added that they can guarantee that she was not suicidal and that she was 'happy and full of life.'

Balconing

The MTV show also explores a social media trend called 'balconing' which was big around Spain at the time in which people jump out of their balconies into the pool for fun.

An ambulance technician said that people end up doing it when they are drunk and Kirsty had been drinking that night.

While her friends said that she 'loved pranks' they did not believe that she would do something that extreme. Kirsty was also apparently scared of heights.

The men in the room

Kirsty plunged from a balcony room where five men had been staying at the time. However, her friends did not know what her connection to the men was.

The men said that she came into the room and was acting 'drunk and strange' - the men say they did not speak to her and did not witness her fall.

Police searched the men's room from head to toe and found that the room was filled with booze and a white substance. The white powder was never identified.

A cigarette butt was also found on the balcony and the man who it belonged to was arrested.

The man who was arrested allegedly told police that Kirsty was "very pretty."

In a video shown in the documentary, a Spanish police detective is heard saying that Kirsty may have been 'intimidated' by the men and that she may have jumped out of fear.

A judge later released the man arrested with no charge just two days later.

Unsatisfied with the investigation, Kirsty's parents hired retired Scottish detective David Swindle to look into the case.

The four men who were not arrested later returned to Benidorm to give evidence but all maintained that they did not see anything.

Sleepwalking

There is another theory that Kirsty was not aware of her actions because she was sleepwalking. But an expert in the show thought that it was odd that no one noticed her walking around.

Her dad said that she has "never slept walked in her life."

Her clothes

An expert also claims that the damage to her skirt when her body was found would suggest that she was 'facing in towards the balcony.'

The expert claims that this ruled out that she jumped, but does not rule out that she could have 'climbed or had been hanging from the balcony.'

There was also allegedly a snag of fabric from her skirt on the balcony.

The family was disturbed to find out that Kirsty's clothes which could have held key DNA evidence were later destroyed by Spanish police.
