Five talking points as Man Utd beat Burnley in behind-closed-doors friendly

Manchester United kept up their fine form as they battled to a 3-1 victory over Burnley in a behind-closed-doors clash at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used Tuesday's friendly to build match fitness for many fringe players, but plenty of first-team regulars were involved in some capacity.

Harry Maguire was the only player to keep his spot in the starting XI which defeated Leeds United 5-1 in the opening game of the Premier League season on Saturday.

And the United captain led his side to victory, with goals from Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and substitute Fred - who also scored at the weekend - as the Red Devils overcame the Clarets.

Here are five talking points from the secretive encounter.

A chance to impress

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made sweeping changes in the second half, he gave a run out to numerous fringe players to stake their claim for involvement in upcoming Premier League fixtures.

The likes of Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams are linked with loan moves away from Old Trafford but started in the full-back slots.

Elsewhere, Juan Mata was deployed on the right flank and Jadon Sancho was handed a start having come off the bench against Leeds.

Of the 12 substitutes, only Matej Kovar was unused as Tom Heaton played 90 minutes in goal. Fred and Victor Lindelof came off the bench at half-time and Solskjaer made nine further changes on the hour mark.

Manchester United XI vs Burnley: Heaton; Dalot, Bailly, Maguire, Williams; Van de Beek, Matic; Mata, Lingard, Sancho; Martial.

Manchester United substitutes: Kovar, Lindelof, Jones, Pogba, Greenwood, Fred, Fernandes, James, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Garner, Hannibal.

Van de Beek deployed in the deep

An unused substitute at the weekend, Donny van de Beek was fielded in a double-pivot with Nemanja Matic for the visit of Burnley.

Heading into the season, there were claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would look to move to a 4-3-3 this season instead of his 4-2-3-1, which could benefit Van de Beek's game time.

But that is yet to materialise - perhaps because Raphael Varane is not yet fit enough to start - and yet another Bruno Fernandes masterclass against Leeds means Van de Beek may have to pursue this deeper role to break into the first team.

Varane plays no part

Raphael Varane completed his transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United over the weekend but he was not involved against Burnley.

The centre-back only joined training for the first time on Monday and he is expected to be named either in the starting line-up or on the bench to face Southampton this weekend.

In Varane's absence, Eric Bailly started alongside Harry Maguire in central defence and the Ivorian picked up a booking.

Fred on target again

Often a frustrating figure last season, Fred has made it two goals in two games for Manchester United, albeit one of those fixtures was a friendly.

The Brazilian scored the Red Devils' fifth of the afternoon against Leeds on Saturday and came off the bench to extend their lead against Burnley three days later.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drew criticism in the 2020/21 campaign for fielding a so-called negative midfield pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay, but there will be no such claims this season if the former can keep up his attacking output.

Same old story for Lingard and Martial

Lingard scored at Queens Park Rangers in pre-season and grabbed another goal against Burnley after weaving through the box to double Manchester United's advantage.

The playmaker has enjoyed a brilliant 2021 since his nine-goal loan spell at West Ham and his performances this summer will only increase the Irons' desire to sign him permanently.

In contrast, Martial managed a paltry four Premier League goals last season and Solskjaer preferred Mason Greenwood to him at centre-forward against Leeds.

Martial was able to get amongst the goals against Burnley - claiming the last touch for the opener - but it still looks as though Greenwood will keep his spot for Sunday's trip to Southampton after his razor-sharp display vs Leeds.
