
Five people – including two children – have been rushed to hospital following an 11-vehicle crash on a motorway in Scotland.
Emergency services were called to the collision on the M73 at junction 2A in Glasgow at around 11pm on Sunday.
The Scottish Ambulance Service said it took five people to hospital, and it is understood that a further three patients were treated and released at the scene.
Amey SW Trunk Roads reported that the carriageway between junctions 2 and 2A on the motorway was closed on Sunday night due to the crash, which it described as involving 15 vehicles.
But the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the crash involved 11 vehicles after initial reports suggested there were around 15.
Police Scotland later said the collision involved 12 vehicles.
The force said the road was closed while recovery work took place, before it reopened around 3.30am.
The ambulance service told The Independent: “We received a call at 11.21pm on Sunday 15 March to attend a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the M73 at Junction 2A.
“We dispatched six ambulances and two special operations response teams to the scene.
“We transported two patients to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, two patients to the Royal Hospital for Children, and one patient to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.”
A fire service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.58pm on Sunday 15 March to reports of a road traffic collision involving approximately 15 vehicles on the M73 at junction 2A Gartcosh and junction 3 of the A80 northbound.
“Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene, which was a collision involving 11 vehicles.
“A number of casualties were in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service, who transported them to hospital.
“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed the force will be taking no further action.
They said: “Around 10.50pm on Sunday, 15 March, 2026, we were called to a report of a crash involving 12 vehicles on the M73 at Gartcosh.
“Emergency services attended and the road was closed.
“Five people were taken to hospital be ambulance as a precaution.
“Recovery was arranged and the road reopened around 3.30am.
“There is no further police action.”
