Eight construction workers from Sydney local government areas (LGAs) of concern have been issued with infringement notices for breaching COVID-19 health orders in Kiama.

Police allege the workers travelled from Sydney to work on a construction site on Collins Street in Kiama.

After a tip-off from the public, police attended a rental home on North Kiama Drive at Kiama Downs on Monday night to speak with the occupants.

On Tuesday morning, police attended the worksite and allege a number of employees ran to a nearby carpark to avoid them.

Police say, following inquiries, five of the 33 workers onsite were identified as being from an LGA of concern and fined.

Police allege the men also lied on their booking for accommodation and the owner of the rental home was unaware where they were from.

Lake Illawarra Police Superintendent Craig Ireland said he was concerned by the behaviour.

"I'm extremely concerned because their actions have the potential to increase the spread and increasing the spread extends the time all these restrictions are in place," Superintendent Ireland said.

He also said the workers had been sent home and had not tested positive to the virus.

"There's nothing to suggest that any of them are positive and the construction industry as it stands is testing their workers every few days," Superintendent Ireland said.

Workers from Greater Sydney must undergo a COVID-19 test every seven days to travel into regional NSW for work.

Inquiries are continuing into further potential breaches of the COVID-19 health regulations.
