Five sub rule approved ahead of Hibs v Kilmarnock as Premiership clubs give plan green light

Scottish Premiership clubs have approved the five substitutes rule ahead of the opening weekend of the season.

Jack Ross will be able to make five changes to his Hibs team during this weekend's match with Kilmarnock as a result, and name nine players on his bench. However the substitutions can only be made in three different windows.

The rule will apply to all matches throughout the 2020/21 season, and is designed to help clubs and players navigate a congested fixture calendar, and allow allow extra recovery time.

While the rule only applies to the Premiership at present, it is likely to be brought in for the start of the Championship and Leagues One and Two in October.

Neil Doncaster, chief executive of the SPFL, said: “As excitement builds ahead of the return to competitive action this weekend, I am pleased that the Premiership clubs have approved this resolution which was recommended by the Board.

"Player welfare was at the forefront of our decision to recommend this change and it is vital that we recognise the additional strain being placed on players as we embark on the 2020/21 season.

“We are preparing similar resolutions for the Scottish Championship, League 1 and League 2 and these will be distributed to the clubs in those divisions in due course.”
