INDORE: Unidentified people poured acid into the mouths of five stray dogs and killed them in Mahalaxmi Nagar area of Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, generating a strong public outcry against the barbaric act.
The incident took place late on September 2. Nagjhiri police registered the case against unknown persons on Friday night under section 428 (commits mischief by killing animals) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Nagjhiri city superintendent of police Vandana Chouhan told reporters.
The matter came to light when an animal rights group in Indore received a call on its helpline that some strays had been brutally attacked with acid, it was stated.
A shopkeeper Dharmendra Parihar and Dr Amruta Soni rushed the dogs with the help of locals to a veterinary hospital, but the dogs could not be saved. Ujjain municipal corporation later disposed of the bodies.
Animal rights groups have petitioned the superintendent of police about the incident, following which a case was registered.
Police were sifting through CCTV grabs to identify the accused, CSP Chouhan said.
