Five sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia over Jamal Khashoggi murder

Five people have been sentenced to death over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia.

The Washington Post columnist was a prominent critic of the Saudi government and was killed inside the kingdom's consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul in October 2018.

The writer, who was based in the US, had entered the building to collect documents he needed to marry his Turkish fiancée.

The Saudi public prosecutor said his death was the result of a "rogue operation" and put 11 unnamed individuals on trial, the BBC reports.

A Saudi court has now sentenced five people to death over the killings and handed prison sentences to three others.

The trials took place in secret with just a few diplomats and members of Khashoggi's family allowed to observe.
