Five Scottish music festivals going ahead this year as Covid restrictions are eased

A number of Scottish music and arts festivals have been given the green light after the majority of Covid restrictions were lifted earlier this week.

Scotland moved beyond level zero on Monday - which paved the way for the reopening of nightclubs, while social distancing measures have been scrapped.

Large gatherings are now back on the agenda for Scots, with punters allowed to pack into sports stadia once again.

It also means that Scotland’s festivals can now go ahead after a year and a half of uncertainty in the industry.

Despite the summer appearing to draw to a conclusion, the show will still go on with festival organisers finalising plans for music fans to return safely.

Here is a list of five festivals which will be going ahead over the coming months.

TRNSMT

The Glasgow festival was one of the first to be given the green light as a Scottish Government gateway event.

This means that the festival will be allowed to run at full capacity, with up to 50,000 people expected to descend on Glasgow Green.

No social distancing measures will be in place when the event runs from September 10 to 12.

The Courteeners, Liam Gallagher and The Chemical Brothers are among the top names set to play the three-day festival.

Organiser Geoff Ellis said: “I’m delighted to confirm we’ve got the permission to go ahead with TRNSMT which is amazing, it’ll be so emotional. It’ll be two years since the last TRNSMT so people will be raring to go.

“We’re so excited, we can’t wait to welcome 50,000 people at Glasgow Green non-socially distanced and with a great line-up.”

Vibration Festival

Organisers behind Vibration Festival announced to fans that the event would be going ahead as planned next month.

The three-day event will take place in Callendar Park in Falkirk from September 3 to 5 with acts such as The Pigeon Detectives, The Fratellis and Reef headlining.

Bosses behind the festival say that they hope to run the event ‘relatively unrestricted’ with no rules on social distancing expected.

The number of people attending the event on each day has been reduced to 3,000 to allow everyone space in the arena to spread out.

Playground Festival

Organisers behind the three-day festival in Glasgow would be going ahead shortly after it was announced that most Covid restrictions would be lifted last week.

The event will take place at Rouken Glen park from September 24 to 26. Acts such as The Libertines, Kelis, Boy George and Chic are included in the star-studded line-up.

Bosses hope that the event will go ahead as normal as possible, with full details of its Covid-19 policy expected soon.

In a statement released last month, organisers said: “We are working closely with East Renfrewshire Council to plan the safest possible event for our guests, staff and local community and have total confidence that Playground Festival will be going ahead as normal as possible.

“As well as confirming some of the world’s most incredible artists and DJs who will be performing across three amazing stages, we have also increased the festival site to ensure more space to move, more toilets and bigger bars.”

Jupiter Rising

Jupiter Rising will take place at the picturesque Jupiter Artland, just outside of Edinburgh, later this month (PA)

Jupiter Rising will go ahead later this month following the Scottish Government’s lifting of most Covid restrictions.

Scotland’s newest independent art and music event will be one of the first festivals to go ahead this year when it kicks off at Jupiter Artland - based just outside of Edinburgh - from August 27 to 29.

Acts such as Romeo Taylor, Pictish Trail and Free Love will be performing over the three days.

Punters will be able to camp in the surroundings of Jupiter Artland’s five-star sculpture garden and even have a cool down with a swim on the lakeside.

Scots will need to provide proof of double vaccination or a negative lateral flow or PCR test to gain entry.

Riverside Festival

Scotland’s ‘premiere electronic music festival’ will return to Glasgow’s Riverside Museum on September 3 to 5.

Jamie xx, Disclosure, Skream and Ben UFO are among the top names to play over the three-day weekend event.

Organisers were thrilled for the festival to be given the green light following the Scottish Government’s announcement last week.

Festival Director Mark Mackechnie said: “We are absolutely delighted to finally be given some clear guidance and the go-ahead for the Riverside Festival to take place.

"It’s been challenging for everybody working on the event and also for customers waiting for the event to be given the green light. Now that’s happened we literally couldn’t be happier and we can’t wait to open the gates and welcome everybody down.”
