Five-run eighth gives Cardinals 5-1 win over Brewers

ST. LOUIS _ Randal Grichuk, after throwing out a runner at the plate to keep the game close in the top of the eighth inning Saturday night, doubled to set up a five-run home eighth for the Cardinals, who rallied for a 5-1 victory at Busch Stadium over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jhonny Peralta beat out a hit to deep short to start the Cardinals' eighth and Grichuk, extending his hitting streak to a career-high nine games, doubled to right center off right-hander Corey Knebel, sending pinch runner Tommy Pham to third. Matt Adams, pinch-hitting for starter Adam Wainwright, who pitched brilliantly for eight innings, grounded to second with the infield back as Pham scored and Grichuk took third.

The Brewers intentionally walked Matt Carpenter but Kolten Wong bounced a single into right and the Cardinals had the lead as an excited Wong thrust his left hand in the air in excitement. Stephen Piscotty was equally jubilant after he greeted Jhan Marinez with a two-run double that broke the game open and kept the Cardinals on pace in the wild-card race.

Yadier Molina added a run-scoring single to cement Wainwright's 11th victory and first at home since July 16.
