Five reasons Chelsea should not waste £70m on Declan Rice in transfer battle with Man United

While Chelsea and the rest of football continues to wait to see when it will return, the Blues are still being linked with new players.

According to the Telegraph, the Blues could be in a potential £70million transfer battle with Manchester United over Declan Rice.

The 21-year-old came through the Blues’s academy at Cobham, however he was released as a youngster but has shone at West Ham United.

Rice is also best friends with Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, but there are a good few reasons the Blues shouldn’t be spending that type of money on the England international.

Jorginho

There are some question marks over Jorginho and his future, with reported interest from both Inter Milan and Juventus.

The 28-year-old was named vice-captain by Frank Lampard ahead of the season and has been a key member of the side.

Of course, he’s not likely to be a long-term future of the midfield, but he should be an important member of the squad if he sticks around past the summer.

Billy Gilmour

In the wins over Liverpool and Everton before the season was suspended, Billy Gilmour showed that Chelsea have a real talent on their hands.

The 18-year-old could be a player in the heart of the Chelsea midfield for many years to come and should be given that chance.

Any move for another midfielder in that position could well block his progress, but Lampard obviously has a belief in the young Scot.

Ethan Ampadu

Ethan Ampadu’s time on loan at RB Leipzig has not really gone the way he would have wanted, with just three substitute appearances in the Bundesliga.

The 19-year-old impressed in the Champions League against Tottenham Hotspur playing in the middle of the back three.

But when he got his chances for the Blues, it was in the middle of the park and the young Wales international showed that he could be a big player for the club.

Trevoh Chalobah

Despite being a centre-back during his time in Chelsea’s academy, during his two loans spells at Ipswich and Huddersfield he has played in central midfield.

The 20-year-old told football.london that he sees his future in midfield and he wants that to be at Chelsea.

Whether or not Lampard agrees, of course, is a different matter, but the England youth international is a real talent as well.

Money to use elsewhere

The money which has been discussed is around the £70million mark, which is a massive fee for a youngster still learning his way in the game.

When the transfer window does eventually reopen, the Blues will have bigger priorities to sort and the money will be needed elsewhere.

West Ham will not let him go cheap, if at all, and it would be a long, long battle which might not prove to be ultimately worth it.
