Five realistic striker targets for Leeds United in January transfer window

Leeds United supporters are hoping to see a striker arrive at Elland Road next month. Whether it be as a short-term fix or long-term solution, the Whites need a body through the door.

Patrick Bamford continues to suffer injury problems - a factor that nearly saw the club relegated last season. Summer signing Wilfried Gnonto is billed as one for the future, despite eight senior Italy caps to his name.

Likewise, 20-year-old Joe Gelhardt has shown glimpses of brilliance but lacks a ruthless streak in the final third. A proven, fully-fit goalscorer could prove the difference between a solid Premier League season and a disastrous one.

Leeds supporters would likely sleep a lot easier if Andrea Radrizzani got the chequebook out in January. Ahead of the winter window, LeedsLive have profiled five men United chiefs could sign.

Chris Wood

Former Whites talisman Wood played some of the best football of his career at Elland Road. An impressive 44 goals in 88 games during a two-year spell earned him a Premier League move to Burnley in 2017.

Newcastle United took a plunge on Wood earlier this year during their desperate relegation fight. Should the Magpies be offered even half of the £25million release clause, they may be tempted to cash in.

Ivan Toney

Signing Toney - who narrowly missed out on a World Cup place - from a direct rival would be a statement of intent. This has all the hallmarks of a potential summer deal, rather than a winter one.

Nevertheless, Toney could be somebody Leeds could consider as the final piece of the jigsaw. A record-breaking move would tell the rest of the division that the Whites mean business.

Noah Okafor

Okafor is a reported Leeds target and featured three times for Switzerland at the World Cup. Valued at £25million, his versatility allows him to play up front or on the flanks.

Red Bull Leipzig are aware that Okafor’s contract only has 18 months left to run - meaning he is available for a cut-price fee. Liverpool are also rumoured to be interested in the 22-year-old.

Armando Broja

Broja was linked with a move away from Chelsea in the summer after a solid campaign at Southampton last year. However, a lack of playing time - due to Graham Potter opting to play Kai Havertz as a false striker - has frustrated the Albanian international.

A young, physically-imposing striker with top-flight experience, Broja could be a shrewd option in next month’s window. Unlike Toney, the 21-year-old would likely only be available on loan, saving Radrizzani and Co a small fortune.

Josh Sargent

American players continue to be linked with a move to Yorkshire as the relationship across the Atlantic grows. Tyler Adams, Brenden Aaronson and manager Jesse Marsch are three fine exports from the States in recent times.

Sargent, the Championship’s top goalscorer, could be next. The 22-year-old - formerly of Werder Bremen - is unproven in the Premier League but Leeds chiefs may fancy a gamble.
