We're spoiled for choice when it comes to the amazing locally-run food and drink venues that Newcastle has to offer - and Heaton is no exception.

The Newcastle suburb is particularly popular with students, and is dotted with independent cafes full of character that promise a friendly welcome. Whether you're looking for somewhere to tuck into a hearty breakfast, or perhaps just a place to grab coffee and a cake with friends, there's likely somewhere in Heaton to suit you.

If you live in Heaton or are just paying the area a visit - perhaps to check out one of its beautiful parks - there are plenty of places to fill up on tasty food, from a creperie inspired by the South of France to coffee specialists and even a cafe-come-florist. Here are just five of Heaton’s unique eateries that are worth checking out.

The Butterfly Cabinet

Ideally situated between Armstrong and Heaton Park, The Butterfly Cabinet has long been a local favourite boasting a quirky interior full of eye-catching original artwork (see if you can spot the namesake pinned butterflies next time you’re in). Their sweet treats include milkshakes of the day made from chocolatey favourites like Oreo, Malteser and Rolo, as well as a cabinet of cakes to browse.

Whether you’re seeking somewhere for breakfast, brunch or lunch, there’s plenty to choose from on The Butterfly Cabinet’s menu. Earlier in the day you can opt for one of their cooked breakfasts, be it English or USA-style - there are also mouth-watering pancake stacks and a selection of omelettes. Lunch options include burgers, salads, pasta dishes and paninis, and several of the meals can also be served up as a veggie version.

Some of the mouth-watering cakes available at the Heaton Hideaway (Heaton Hideaway)

Heaton Hideaway

This Heaton Road cafe is ideal for a hearty lunch, with the likes of fresh stone-baked pizza and a signature “Chicken Tower” burger on the menu. They also offer a full English if you’re stopping by for breakfast, as well as specials throughout the week such as “Fish & Chip Fridays” and Sunday roasts.

The cafe also specialises in indulgent treats with past favourites including Crunchie, Ferrero Rocher and Baileys-flavoured cakes. What’s more, the Heaton Hideaway is a favourite among dog owners - with its “Fur Babies” wall showing off the adorable pups who have paid a visit to the cafe - and is perfectly placed for a dog-friendly stop-off after a picturesque walk with your pooch in Heaton Park.

Monsieur Crepe

As the name suggests, crepes are the speciality at this French-inspired hidden gem cafe with several sweet and savoury options to choose from. Sweet crepe flavours range from raspberry and white chocolate to poached apple with salted caramel, and savoury galettes include popular dish the Grand Brekky which stuffs all the favourites of a full English inside a crepe.

Monsieur Crepe also serves up fluffy American pancake stacks, topped with the likes of bacon and maple syrup or banana with salted caramel. There are also breakfast paninis, jacket potatoes and deli sandwiches on the menu, as well as afternoon tea, cakes, scones, and freakshakes.

Brew & Bite on Chillingham Road offers up a selection of freshly baked goods (Brew & Bite)

Brew & Bite

This speciality coffee shop can be found on Chillingham Road, and also has a second branch in Gosforth. With a range of toasties, bagels and savoury croissants to choose from if you fancy a bite to eat, Brew & Bite also has an On The Go range with breakfast pots, sandwiches and salads ready to take away - perfect for those on their way to the office or wanting to enjoy their food in one of the nearby parks.

The cafe also has an ever-changing range of freshly baked treats including cakes, cookies and brownies, as well as quirky croissant mashups like their cruffins and croclairs. Previous highlights on the treats menu have included sticky toffee slices, Creme Egg brownies, pecan and chocolate tarts, and plum and pistachio pies.

Fork in the Rose

Another Heaton Road gem, this cafe brings something a little different to the area - it claims itself as the only cafe in the North East that doubles up as a florist. You can browse the cafe’s selection of locally-grown flowers while grabbing breakfast or brunch.

The cafe menu includes cooked breakfasts and a build-your-own section where you can choose your own fillings for a hot sandwich or omelette. They also dish up the likes of Eggs Benedict, chorizo hash and smoked mackerel pate, with vegetarian and vegan options available too.
