Five potential opponents for Conor McGregor's next fight after sensational win over Donald Cerrone in UFC return

With the dust slowly beginning to settle on his sensational 40-second win over Donald Cerrone in his UFC return, you’d think what’s next for Conor McGregor.

The Notorious one made a successful return to the cage, making light work of veteran Cerrone in just 40 seconds - dominating the American before earning the TKO win.

And McGregor revealed shortly after the fight that he’s happy at 170 and is open to fighting at welterweight in the future - opening a window for a range of challengers in the weight class.

But the Notorious one has unfinished business at lightweight, and an array of contenders calling for his head, including foe Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje.

Here’s five potential fights for the Notorious:

Jorge Masvidal

McGregor wants that BMF title, but we all know Dana White doesn’t like the idea. But Masvidal looked very interested sitting at cageside tonight and it looks like one that would really wet the appetite of fans.

Kamaru Usman

This is a little less likely, but now perhaps possible after McGregor’s post-fight comments. He was watching closely in the T-Mobile Arena tonight and you never know if McGregor would fancy the chance to become a three-weight champ.

Justin Gaethje

Gaethje and McGregor aren’t friends, and the American was one of the big contenders for the Dubliner’s return. If McGregor still has eyes on lightweight and Khabib - Gaethje is a brilliant fight and a very possible match-up considering McGregor mightn’t get a crack at the belt just yet.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Surely the rematch will be in the pipeline now, because we all know this feud is far from over. Khabib has Tony Ferguson to worry about in April, but this isn’t the first time they’ve aligned and McGregor could be ready to hop in and replace Ferguson if injuries get in the way like they have in the past.

If none of the above work out, there’s always the fight we’ve all been waiting for. A trilogy fight with his greatest ever foe would surely break UFC records. It’s the one that the fans want, so why not make it happen sooner rather than later?
