Five players we want to see play for Ireland in Bulgaria friendly

Mick McCarthy's Ireland reeled in the years on Thursday with a retro flashback to the days where Ireland just won't give in - coming back from the dead to rescue a draw against Switzerland.

And as McCarthy's preferred eleven sit back and prepare for a hectic club period before Ireland's Euro 2020 last stand in October - the squad's fringe players will likely get their shot.

Bulgaria are in town on Tuesday, having lost 4-0 to England yesterday, and the friendly is a chance for McCarthy to experiment and perhaps hand caps to younger and less experienced members of the squad.

We know that there'll be no Troy Parrott, as he jets to Sweden for under-21 duty with Stephen Kenny's side, but there's plenty of prospects for the future in line to get some game time.

And McCarthy, speaking after the draw with Switzerland, hinted himself that he'll ring in the changes for the friendly.

McCarthy said: "The lads who travel around and never get a game, that's not right either. What happens if we need them?

“It’s also important that the ones who have been playing up to now then support them, just like they’ve had that support."

Here's five players Irish Mirror Sport want to see get the nod on Tuesday:

Jack Byrne

We're going to put our League of Ireland hat on, and insist that this has to happen. Whether it's a start or twenty minutes off the bench - it's something that the domestic league needs and deserves.

The Shamrock Rovers ace is the stand out player in the Airtricity League this year, and has produced the goods on the European stage too - if he's good enough to make the final squad this month then surely McCarthy will give him the debut.

Josh Cullen

This is the perfect game for the West Hame man (on loan at Charlton Athletic) to make his Ireland bow. With either Whelan or Hendrick likely to drop out after the Swiss game - Cullen could be your man to fill the void in the middle.

Mark Travers

He's great and we love him, but why play Darren Randolph on Tuesday?

Right now, Randolph is the the only capped goalkeeper at our disposal and at 32 - he's not getting any younger.

Travers has made a handful of Premier League appearances with Bournemouth and has a bright future. It just makes sense.

Ronan Curtis

Portsmouth attacker Curtis deserves his shot from the start after a couple of minutes off the bench here and there in the dying embers of Martin O'Neill's reign. With both David McGoldrick and Callum Robinson ruled out - Curtis is a serious contender to step in up front.

James Collins

(PA)

This is an outside shot, admittedly - but this man can do no wrong at club level and who knows what he could produce in an Ireland shirt.

The Luton Town man scored 44 goals in back-to-back promotions on his way to the Championship, and he's well off the mark this season too. In an Ireland side bleeding for a goalscoring touch, the 28-year-old is well used to finding the net.
