Pep Guardiola was left stunned after finding out Fernandinho had revealed his desire to move back to Brazil and therefore leave Manchester City at the end of the season.
During Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the Atletico Madrid clash, the Brazilian had told the media of his plans, which were unbeknown to his boss until relayed by the MEN's Simon Bajkowski. That said, it could have hardly been totally unexpected given the lack of playing time he’s offered the 36-year-old this term.
The club captain has started just six Premier League games this season after racking up 350 appearances in City colours in the previous eight campaigns. Fernandinho said the decision to return to his homeland was taken after speaking to his family.

"I want to play. I will go back to Brazil,” he said. “I decided with my family, which is the most important thing for me. It is the same as last season.
“I'm not playing much but I take care of other players and try to help wherever I can — on or off the pitch." Fernandinho will surely be remembered as one of the club’s greats after lifting four Premier League titles, six League Cups and an FA Cup.
For many, his departure will mark the end of an era. The void he leaves in the squad, though, will ultimately have to be filled. Here, the MEN Sport looks at five options City could bring in to replace Fernandinho.
Aurélien Tchouaméni
City have been linked with Aurélien Tchouaméni in recent months. The 22-year-old still has bags of potential despite already being one of Europe’s top talents.
The defensive midfielder recently responded to the speculation surrounding his future by saying: "I continue to work and progress and we will see later." Tchouaméni has helped his side keep 14 clean sheets across all competitions this season and has proven to be a reliable player.
Mikel Merino
Not the most well-known player but Newcastle fans will know the name Mikel Merino. The midfielder joined the Magpies from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 but moved Real Sociedad after feeling homesick.
Since then, he has caught the eye of several European giants, including City. Recent reports claim Guardiola could be set to trigger his £50m release clause this summer. The 25-year-old is likely to be more willing to play second fiddle to Rodri, too.
Declan Rice
An obvious choice but not the most straightforward. West Ham slapped a £150m valuation on Declan Rice but City may not be able to justify another cost-heavy transfer should Erling Haaland arrive.
The England international possesses many of the qualities an experienced Fernandinho has, but at a much younger age with potential to be even better. And, because of this, he will be demanding regular first-team action, which could create conflict with current first-choice Rodri - a headache Guardiola may want to avoid.
Enzo Fernandez

City are set to welcome January signing Julian Alvarez to the Etihad this summer once his loan spell at River Plate expires. But the Argentinian media report that City are also now looking at his teammate, Enzo Fernandez.
The 21-year-old is in line for a call-up to the Argentina World Cup squad and has been touted as one of the brightest prospects in South America. His £20m release clause may tempt Guardiola who will be getting a player he can mould without the midfielder being too demanding of game time ahead of Rodri.
Kalvin Phillips
Rivals Manchester United have been the team most linked with Kalvin Phillips. The England star has seen contract negotiations with Leeds stall, opening the door for other clubs.
Phillips has not been a consideration for Guardiola so far but the exit of Fernandinho at the end of the season may make him think twice. As with Rice, the 26-year-old will be wanting regular game time, though, which may not be guaranteed.
