Five places to watch Royal Air Tattoo 2022 planes for free within an hour of Bristol

The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) returns this weekend and is expected to welcome 170,000 visitors at RAF Fairford. However, for people who don't want to spend their day among large crowds, the spectacular aircraft show can still be enjoyed from some peaceful places within an hours drive of Bristol - and all for free, report Gloucestershire Live.

Following an exclusive preview day on the Friday, the displays on Saturday and Sunday are set to last eight hours, so there’s plenty of time slots to choose from. However, people who are keen to watch the world’s largest military airshow event on Sunday are being advised to take care amid the Met Office's 'amber' warning of dangerous heat.

Spectators should fully protect themselves from the sun and keep fully hydrated - although its worth noting that the predicted lack of clouds will only add to the jaw-dropping sight. With tickets sold out for the Saturday and Sunday, check out this list of areas around the site where you will be able to catch a glimpse of the show.

Spots to watch the Royal International Air Tattoo displays for free

The Masons Arms, Meysey Hampton

The Masons Arms sits in the bustling Cotswolds village of Meysey Hampton near Cirencester. Its garden is ideal for a hot summer’s day - but there is a risk you could be caught up in the event traffic as it isn’t too far far from the end of the runway.

Cotswold Water Park

A water park would seem to be the perfect location for what is expected to be a sweltering weekend - and the planes are still visible from here.

South Cerney

While you might not have the best view from here, the beautiful lakes in this area will at the very least be scenic, and there will be sufficient aircraft passing by to make it worth your day.

The George, Kempsford

A huge playing field near this pub can provide you with a great view - and the pub gives you a chance to enjoy a drink in the sunshine. In the neighbouring village to Fairford, you can expect to hear the planes loud and clear this weekend.

Quenington

Another village in the Cotswolds, Quenington has plenty of green space as well as a pub - the Keepers Arms - which will welcome visitors in need of respite from the sun. There are also some great walks to Bibury, Fairford and the surrounding countryside of the Coln Valley from here.
