Five places to get vegan 'fish' and chips in Newcastle

While many swap meat for fish on Good Friday, there are those who won't eat either.

But vegans don't have to miss out on the deep fried Bank Holiday tradition , as more and more restaurants are catering for them.

So if you're meat and dairy-free, but still want a taste of Good Friday fayre, you could try one of these five options in Newcastle.

The Ship, Ouseburn

If you didn't know, The Ship has been fully vegan since 2016.

One of the pub's best-loved dishes is its vegan take on fish and chips, with beer-battered tofu wrapped in a bit of seaweed, served with chips and peas.

Animal activists PETA has included The Ship on its list of the best vegan fish and chips .

The Carriage, Jesmond

The Ship's sister pub, The Carriage, also serves a vegan menu.

And, as is the case at The Ship, the Carriage's fish replacement is made of banana blossom and is a popular Friday treat for Newcastle's Vegang.

Sky Apple, Heaton

Not to be outdone by neighbouring Jesmond and Ouseburn, Heaton holds its own too on fish-free-fish and chips.

Sky Apple, on Heaton Road, offers both vegetarian and vegan takes on chip shop favourites, on Fridays.

Little Green, Sandyford

If you want to eat vegan, it looks like Newcaslte's East End is the place to go.

Sandyford is also home to a vegan cafe which serves a take on fish and chips, Little Green.

And, Little Green's is healthy too.

The cafe in Goldspink Lane will be serving up its baked marinated juicy tofu sealed in a nori & panko crumb from noon on Good Friday.

It's served with wedges, peas and homemade vegan tartar sauce.

Writing on Facebook, Little Green said: "We want you to bring you all of the flavours we without the saturated fats and salty nonsense."

Hungry Horse Pubs - Try Newton Park, Benton Road

Hungry Horse pubs have added a vegan take on fish and chips to their menus.

According to the website, the vegan fish-free fillets and chips are available at Newton Park in Benton Road.
