Five people rescued after boat starts to sink in North Sea sparking frantic Mayday call

Five people have been rescued after a boat started to sink sparking a frantic Mayday call from the crew.

The vessel began taking on water in the North Sea last night around 90 nautical miles east of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire.

A rescue operation was launched at 9.30pm to help remove the passengers from the boat immediately.

A coastguard rescue helicopter and an offshore helicopter that was nearby went to the scene along with the RNLI Peterhead all weather lifeboat.

The vessel, with five people on board, is now being escorted back to Peterhead by the lifeboat.

There were no reports of any injuries.
