Five people from Bristol charged by Metropolitan Police following Extinction Rebellion climate change protests in London

Five of the 69 people charged by Scotland Yard in connection with the Extinction Rebellion protests in London are from Bristol.  

They will appear in various London courts over the next few days charged with offences including breach of Section 14 Notice of the Public Order Act 1986, obstructing a highway and obstructing police.

Three others have been charged by British Transport Police and have appeared in court.

Scores of climate change protesters - including coach-loads of Bristol campaigners - brought parts of central London, including the iconic Oxford Circus, to a standstill last week in order to show their passionate support for a radical plan to tackle environmental concerns.

Bristol protesters lobbied the European headquarters of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan plan, which is the biggest private investor in airports in Europe, and owns a large share of Bristol Airport.

Many also travelled to Oxford Circus to keep watch over a blockade in the city centre, shutting down the main arterial road to traffic all night.

Those named so far from Bristol are as follows:

  • Steven Melia, 56, of St Philips, Bristol
  • Louise Treneman, 25, of Northcote Road, Bristol
  • William Cooke, 36, of Barton Hill, Bristol 
  • Emily Cox, 33, of Eastville, Bristol
  • Rachel Baker, 34, of Warminster Road, Bristol
