Five parts of Edinburgh that are suffering with extremely high Covid rates

Coronavirus cases have remained relatively high in Edinburgh in the last week, with the virus still prominent in the capital.

In the last seven days, over 1,267 new infections have been reported by Public Health Scotland, despite there now being no restrictions surrounding the virus.

In Edinburgh, the last week of data has shown that the Hyvots and Gilmerton area was the worst hotspot in the city, with 18 new cases and an infection rate of 465.8 per 100,000 of population.

Close behind was Gorgie West, with 24 new cases and an infection rate of 425.2 per 100,000 of population. This was then followed by Balgreen and Roseburn, with 18 new cases and an infection rate of 408.1.

The least affected area appears to be Newington and Dalkeith Road with just four new cases and an infection rate of 60.8 per 100,000 of population.

The BA.2.75 variant , or Centaurus, was first picked up in India in early May and after arriving in the UK, cases have been moving in a sharp upward trend, as in recent weeks, health experts at the University of Edinburgh, have expressed concerns over the growing number of cases in Scotland.

The Scottish Government Covid advice remains the same and you can order tests free to your home on the Scottish Government website.

You should stay at home and avoid contact with other people if you have symptoms of a respiratory infection such as coronavirus and you have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to go to work or carry out normal activities.

Symptoms of coronavirus include:

  • continuous cough
  • high temperature, fever or chills
  • loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell
  • shortness of breath
  • unexplained tiredness, lack of energy
  • muscle aches or pains that are not due to exercise
  • not wanting to eat or not feeling hungry
  • headache that's unusual or longer lasting than usual
  • sore throat, stuffy or runny nose
  • diarrhoea
  • feeling sick or being sick

Most people in Scotland no longer need to test for coronavirus but you can still access testing if:

  • you work in NHS health or social care settings
  • you have a health condition which means you’re eligible for new coronavirus treatments
  • you're going into hospital for surgery or a procedure
  • you're visiting a hospital or care home
  • you're an unpaid carer
  • you're applying for the self-isolation support grant

Anyone else who is eligible for testing can order tests online or by phoning 119. If you have received a positive test result and have been self-isolating.

You do not need to continue with any further testing unless you have been advised to do so by a health professional and you do not need to have a negative test result to end self-isolation, follow the stay at home advice. You can find out more here.
