Five original Genesis members 'might never appear on stage together again'

As Genesis prepare for what Phil Collins says could be his last ever tour, founding member Steve Hackett warns all five original members might never appear on stage together again.

“Don’t hold your breath,” he says of the “competitive” bandmates.

Steve was part of the group in the 70s and quit after bandmate Peter Gabriel left in 1975.

The five piece came together again for a reunion gig in 1982, but haven’t performed together since.

Now, with Phil - who can no longer hold a drumstick after surgery on his back - admitting he sees the trio’s upcoming Last Domino? tour as him “putting the band to bed”.

Steve says of getting all five members on stage together: “I can’t see it happening. Genesis is a very competitive band. Whilst we all wish each other well, we’re all still probably trying to outdo each other.”

The guitarist adds: “When bands get together it often turns into phase cancellation.

“Someone suggests a good idea and someone else shouts it down. The frustrating thing about bands is often they might privately congratulate each other and then publicly denounce each other. It’s a band dynamic, which is why it’s hard for bands to get anything done.

“I wouldn’t rule it out. But I would say the addendum is: ‘Don’t hold your breath.’ If you want to see what Genesis is all about, see both shows and you’ll get the whole story.

Trio Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford are embarking on their postponed tour later this month, which will focus on the group’s music from the 1980s onwards, while Steve tours solo playing their hits from the 1970s as well as songs from his new album, Surrender Of Silence. (MUST REF)
