1 Orchestra Of Opera North

Opera North is currently touring its Ring cycle, and as if to rival that project for sheer scale, the company’s orchestra devotes its last concert of the season to Mahler’s eighth symphony. For the so-called “symphony of a thousand” (due to the vast numbers needed to perform it) conductor David Hill will also call upon the Leeds Festival and Philharmonic choruses, the Bradford Catholic Youth Choir and a bevy of soloists.

2 Iris

Opera Holland Park has created its own niche among the summer opera festivals by reviving forgotten verismo operas from the turn of the 20th century. Opening the 2016 season is Mascagni’s Iris, first dusted down by OHP in 1997.

3 Daniil Trifonov

Since he won the Tchaikovsky piano competition in 2011, Daniil Trifonov has moved effortlessly into the top rank of living pianists. His residency at Wigmore Hall ends this week with two concerts.

4 Tristan And Isolde

All eyes will be on the ENO’s new version of Wagner’s tragic love story, and not just because any staging is a challenge. Daniel Kramer (ENO’s next artistic director) helms, while Edward Gardner – who stepped down as music director last summer – conducts.

5 Illuminations

The Aldeburgh festival still centres on Benjamin Britten’s music, striving each year for fresh ways of presenting it. This year’s festival includes a new take on his song-cycle Les Illuminations.
