Five North East coronavirus deaths as a further 351 people die with the disease in the UK

Another five people have died with coronavirus in our region according to the latest death figures.

They are among 351 people around the UK who have died in hospitals, care homes or at home in the last 24-hour period.

The official death toll has now reached 36,393 but it is suspected that the reality is higher.

The number of deaths in hospitals are released by NHS England each day.

In the North East, five more patients who tested positive for coronavirus and then died in hospital were counted among the latest NHS figures.

The data was collected between 5pm on Wednesday and 5pm on Thursday but the deaths may have taken place in the days before this.

In the 24-hour period up to 9am on Friday, 140,497 tests were carried out or dispatched, with a total of 80,297 people tested. A total of 3,287 positive cases were found..

Overall 3,231,921 tests have been carried out, and 254,195 cases have been confirmed positive.
