Five nightclub rules in Scotland for partygoers - including face mask 'three Ds'

Clubbers returned to Scotland's dance floors last night after remaining empty for the whole of the pandemic.

On Monday, nightclubs opened their doors at the stroke of midnight on 'Freedom Day' as excited revellers returned to drinking and dancing.

Eager customers at the front of the queue vowed to be "out every night" after clubs were shut for 18 months due to the virus and lockdown restrictions.

As clubbers enjoy the freedoms beyond Level 0, there are still some rules in place to keep people safe while boogying on the dance floor.

Here are the top five rules in place across Scotland's nightclubs...

1. Face masks - the 'three Ds'

Following initial confusion last week, the Scottish Government clarified that masks would not have to be worn for three Ds - dancing drinking, or dining.

Punters are still required to wear a face covering when entering and exiting the club and going to the toilet or the bar.

Unless eating, drinking or dancing, a mask must be worn - this is a legal requirement.

2. Collection of customer details

Nightclubs are required by law to collect contact details from customers before entry.

This is for Test and Protect, so that people can be notified if they have come into contact with someone who has tested positive with coronavirus.

The Scottish Government say this is the only legal requirement along with wearing face masks.

3. 'Vertical drinking' allowed

Clubbers don't have to be seated to have a drink in pubs or nightclubs from Freedom Day.

During most of the pandemic, people were not allowed to prop against the bar and were required to sit down while eating and drinking.

Under new nightclubs rules, punters can stand up - coined as 'vertical drinking' - while enjoying a tipple - that includes on the dance floor.

4. Hand washing and lots of sanitiser

Hand hygiene will continue beyond Level 0 - and this includes in nightclubs.

The Scottish Government is asking everyone to keep on washing their hands and using sanitiser made available in public spaces.

Cleaning of surfaces will also continue, with restaurants, pubs and nightclubs all ensuring their venues are scrubbed thoroughly between customers.

If needing to sneeze or cough around other people, people are urged to do it into a tissue, handkerchief or your elbow to minimise the chance of spreading illness.

5. Rules in place until 2022

While nightclub rules have eased, punters could be asked to follow the current restrictions until at least 2022.

Under the latest guidance published by the Scottish Government, precautionary measures could remain until next year in a bid 'help manage the increased pressure the NHS will face over the winter period.'

However, Nicola Sturgeon will review these restrictions every three weeks.
