Five new driving laws that have come into effect this year

The government has introduced five new driving laws this year that could prove costly to drivers if ignored.

Breaking any driving law usually results in a whopping fine and points on your licence which could ultimately affect your ability to drive.

Among the rules that have been introduced this year include rougher enforcements for smart motorway drivers and modifications to number plates.

According to the Liverpool Echo, here's fine new driving laws you should be aware of.

A modification has been implemented into the Highway Code which makes it illegal to drive in any lane marked with a red X.

The symbol usually indicated that motorists should not drive along the hard shoulder because a vehicle has broken down or there's been an accident.

Changes to UK number plates

Any British driver planning to drive through Europe will have to remove the GB sticker from their licence plate.

The law came into effect on September 27 and states that the sticker is no longer valid and has to be replaced with a 'UK' symbol.

Otherwise, a new number plate with the UK designation will need to be ordered.

This is due to the fact that we're no longer part of the EU - British drivers in Europe must also carry a physical copy of a green card and have driving licences with them at all times.

Harsher penalties for using a phone behind the wheel

While it is already illegal (and dangerous) to use your phone to make calls or texts while behind the wheel, the law has now been strengthened by the government.

Anyone caught doing so will face a £200 fixed penalty and receive six points on their licence.

But drivers will still be able to use "hands-free" devices in their vehicle as long as it doesn't obstruct their ability to drive safely.

The law applies even if the car isn't moving.

Speed limiters

From 2022, all new cars must be fitted with a speed limiter.

The Intelligent Speed Assistance system uses video or GPS to detect speed signs, and alert the driver if they're going above the speed limit.

The technology has the power to take over the car if the driver doesn't slow down.

Green number plates

Green number players are now legal in the UK for zero-emissions cars which can be easily detected by the authorities.

It allows for incentives to be offered to zero-emissions drivers, including cheaper parking.
