A 46-year-old man was then arrested a short time later, at the Anfield turnstiles, on suspicion of breach of the peace.

He added: "I only caught the end of it, before this they were wandering around near the scarf vendors, with their belts out looking for trouble.

"One of them threw a bottle and it hit my foot, but thankfully by then the police had grabbed their attention.

"The horses scared them and they went towards their gate after this.

"They went down past the gates towards their entrance, so I can only assume they were heading inside after the scuffle."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Officers policing the Liverpool v Napoli Champions League game at Anfield tonight (Wednesday, 27 November 2019) have arrested 5 Napoli fans following incidents of disorder prior to the game.

"And a fifth man (aged 46 years) was arrested for breach of the peace at the turnstiles on Anfield Road.

"Those arrested have been taken to police stations where they will be interviewed.

"There was some disorder near to the Arkles pub on Anfield Road but the crowds were dispersed by officers who were at the ground."
