Five Napoli fans arrested amid crowd disorder outside Anfield ahead of Liverpool game

Five Napoli fans have been arrested outside Anfield ahead Liverpool's Champions League clash with the Italian side, police have confirmed.

Three of the men, aged 29, 31 and 45, were arrested on suspicions of violent disorder, while another man, 30, was arrested on suspicion of affray. The final man, 46, was arrested at the Anfield turnstiles on suspicion of breach of the peace.

Police confirmed that the five fans were all taken to the station to be interviewed.

A statement read: "Officers policing the Liverpool v Napoli Champions League game at Anfield tonight [Wednesday, 27 November 2019] have arrested five Napoli fans following incidents of disorder prior to the game.

"Three men [aged 45, 31 and 29 years] were arrested for violent disorder and a 30-year-old man was arrested for affray following disorder on Walton Breck Road.

"And a fifth man [aged 46 years] was arrested for breach of the peace at the turnstiles on Anfield Road.

"Those arrested have been taken to police stations where they will be interviewed.

"There was some disorder near to the Arkles pub on Anfield Road but the crowds were dispersed by officers who were at the ground."

Merseyside Police responded to claims a group of Napoli fans had arrived in Liverpool armed with golf clubs ahead of the match.

Police confirmed that a number of flag poles were confiscated ahead of the game, but no golf clubs were found.

A statement ahead of the match read: "Merseyside Police is aware of social media posts saying Napoli fans are armed with golf clubs in the city centre.

Officers have responded and confiscated a number of flags attached to flag poles. No golf clubs have been found."
