Five men fined $3000 each for Hexham gathering

Five people were fined for an alleged outdoor gathering at Hexham on Thursday as police issued more than 100 penalty infringements for COVID-19 breaches across the Hunter.

Newcastle police received reports of a potential gathering of vehicles on Ash Island about 10pm.

Police patrolling the area stopped a vehicle on Scotts Point Way and spoke with a 24-year-old man.

It is alleged he was unable to provide police with a reasonable excuse to be away from home and he was issued with a $1000 Penalty Infringement Notice (PIN).

Police continued along the road and claim to have found several vehicles parked and a small fire at a reserve nearby.

Five men aged between 17 and 28 were spoken to and police said they were unable to provide a reasonable excuse for being outside their homes and gathered together.

All five were issued with $3000 PINs for not complying with outdoor gatherings direction.

There were 104 fines issued for COVID-19 breaches on Thursday across the four Hunter police districts.

The most were in Port Stephens-Hunter with 32, followed by Hunter Valley with 29, Newcastle had 22 and Lake Macquarie 21.
