Five members of Swedish Royal Family stripped of status after King Gustaf removes grandchildren from royal house

The Swedish Royal Family is going through some serious changes. King Carl Gustaf of Sweden stripped five of his grandchildren of their royal status according to an official statement, which means they won’t continue to get taxpayer funds.

But this is no family rift - his children have since posted on Instagram to welcome the change.

King Gustaf has three children: Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Princess Madeleine and Prince Carl Philip. Their children, who range from one to five-years-old, will still keep their titles but they won’t have to perform any royal duties or receive funds from the public. The parents will continue to fulfil their royal duties.

Crown Princess Victoria’s children Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar still have their royal status.

Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia as well as Princess Madeleine and her husband, Christopher O'Neill spoke out about the change on social media.

Princess Madeleine, who is King Gustaf’s youngest daughter, wrote on Instagram, “Chris and I think it is good that our children now have a greater opportunity to shape their own lives as individuals in the future.” and added the change had been “planned for a long time.”

There were rumors that a move like this was in play after Princess Madeleine and her husband moved to South Florida with their children. The family is currently residing in Miami according to a recent interview, where the princess discussed her children's daily lives.

Her brother, Prince Carl Philip (who famously looks remarkably like the 50 Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan) posted a similar sentiment on his own Instagram page.

“Today, the King announced the decision that our children no longer hold the Royal Highness position. We see this as positive as Alexander and Gabriel will have freer choices in life,” he said about his two children.

He added, “They will retain their prince titles and their duchies, Södermanland and Dalarna, which we value and are proud of. Our family has strong connections to both landscapes and we maintain our commitment there.”
